Biggest innovation in gaming this generation?

Online Multiplayer 27 15.08%

Motion Controls 96 53.63%

Technological Leap 22 12.29%

Other 7 3.91%

Motion Controls

The rest already existed in the PC gaming market, just not very robust in the home console gaming market. Even then, if we go just down to home console gaming market, we've had online for generations, XBL just "perfected" it. Achievements (while cool and addictive) don't really add to gameplay. Technological leaps aren't really an innovation either. We've had lots of technological leaps, and every single one has followed the logical path.

As for DLC, I have a love/hate relationship with it. Generally I refuse to pay for DLC, but I can see the benefits of being able to download a map pack for a popular shooter 6-12 months after it was initially released. However, I hate that people put out buggy games and just fix them via DLC, or have DLC available within 1 month because they figured they could earn more by making you pay extra for content that should have been included in the first place.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy
In the past we played games. In the future we watch games. - Forest-Spirit

lol...someone said heavy rain.

In any case...how do we define biggest?

Innovation which is most fun? Innovation which helped sell most consoles? Innovation which made a change in how games are played?

Shit...the answer to all that is motion controls.

Mmmm... Online I suppose.

Love Achievements/Trophies though.

EDIT: Guess I should give a reason.

I chose online because it was a huge factor that effected all platforms from the beginning of the gen and really effected the sales of games across the board.

Motion Controls was a huge factor but mainly on the Wii. Other platforms aren't even seeing proper motion controls until halfway through the gen. Sixaxis was largely ignored and had nearly no impact on sales or game development what so ever.

That would be an opinion I'm afraid.

Motion Controls and whoever bitches about it not being is just plane crazy and fanboy.

Nintendo once again brought something to the table that others had to copy to try to keep competitive in the market, that's the ultimate proof.

And I am not talking only about Sony and Microsoft own approaches to the once "gimmick fad", but also SEGA with their blatant Wii Rip-Off named SEGA Zonewhatever and countless PC and console wiimotesque peripherals.

I think the most important innovation is the one that makes me enjoy a game more and extends the value.
For some it might be online multiplayer, but for me it's clearly achievements.

So in your opinion what is the single biggest innovation to console gaming this generation?

  • Online Multiplayer
  • Motion Controls
  • Achievements
  • Technological Leap
  • Downloadable Content
  • Other
  • Online Gaming - nah , thats not something new, i've been playing online games since ages ago, well on PC that is, even though im not a fan of online play. and in last gen there was also Xbox live.
  • Motion Controls - yes i agree with this one, even though it still have a long way to go.
  • Achievements - i think this is second big innovation, even though they don't add much to the gameplay, but it seems people are addicted to it.
  • Tech Leap - hell no, the leap wasn't that big and older PC games still look alot better and run smoother than alot of newer games, i think the leap from PS1 --> PS2 was alot bigger, and the original Xbox made it even more bigger.
  • Downloadable Content - these been on PCs (and some consoles) since they were made, and they're still annoying as they were the first time, i dont think its an innovation rather than a DOWNGRADE (developers supposed to release a full game not a half a game with DLC)
  • Other - hmm.... i think of three things
  1. full downloadable games - like the games released on Steam / XBLA / PSN / VC .
  2. OnLive - if it succeeds
  3. 3-D Gaming - if it succeeds

I live for the burn...and the sting of pleasure...
I live for the sword, the steel, and the gun...

Copycats. The best indication that you're popular ^_^

Just like in NES days, I mean how many Famiclones were produced? I used to play chinese bootlegs on my Dendy by Steepler company, a Famiclone that was popular in ex-USSR countries through early nineties.

online, maybe motion controlls
but I can live without them

that's a nice title for a thread to put in all the Wii knock offs.
