Check out the awesomeness of 2014:
come predict in here if you dont mind!
Do you truly believe the JRPGs should a adopt a more modern approach? :/
I honestly want them to stay as close SNES RPGs as possible.
2 features in JRPG's that continue to bug me: The first is a lack of fun explorable world's. Have you ever Dragon Quest Vlll or Final Fantasy Xll? I looove those game's for sense of adventure that they put on you. They're the kinda game's that make me want to go around and look in every little area just to see what's there. In current JRPG's that sense of exploration does not exist outside of Xenoblade. I am playing FF 13-2 currently and the worst part of the game is exploring and thats because it, along with other JRPG's, is built so linear. They dont leave any room for the player to feel like they're on a adventure. Here you are at starting point A take this straight barely branching path to point B. Every JRPG is built more like Final Fantasy X and less like Xll nowaday's. I know you seen the X trailer. That's the scope modern JRPG's should be aiming for.
The second one is how untangible the game worlds are. Lightning Return's, Xenoblade, and FF15 have one design model I gush over. If you can see it you can go their. I'm tired of static environment's...You know, environment's that are just there for your character to run through. The most impressive thing about FF15 is the integration of the environment into the game. We see plenty of times in the E3 where monsters attacking and pieces of the environment are be damaged/destroyed or player using environment as a way to deal damage. Xenoblade did this too. If your running around and you see river you just swim through it unlike current/past jrpg's where it would be one of those untangible objects that's just there for scenery that you would have to find another way around. That's what I want to see more of in modern JRPG's. In FF 13-2 the game gives you the ability to jump over obstacle's...when it wants you to. Sooo you jump/down up 20 feet high cliffs then all of sudden a waist high piller blocks your path and your force to find another path around *eyeroll*
Advancements like those would be more than enough for me. I Cant see how they would hurt the genre.
Turn based and ATB is the best way to go. Whether they were there for technical limits is irrelevant, that's the most fun way in RPGs. What's the point of a Dark Souls like system? That game hardly feels like a JRPG and more like an action game.
FF12 is very much a turn based battle system. It plays exactly like classic FF's. Dont let the the free movement throw you off because it is pointless. You still must wait your turn indicated by a ATB. Everything is still menu based If a enemy cast fire its going to hit you no matter far away you run . You cannot outrun attacks like ARPG. If a enemy gears up for an physical attack and you run up a set of stairs and around the corner the attack will still connect!. FF12 is a turnbased battle system without transitions screens. Another good example is White Knight chronicles.
I dont consider Dark Souls a RPG. Dark Souls is like the original Zelda with RPG mechanics. If I need a RPG fix I wouldn't choose Dark Souls.
predict here Pikmin 3 FW japan!
