Miguel is working on a new mod thread. I don't know when exactly it'll be posted, but hopefully you won't have to wait too much longer for it. I actually spoke to him about it briefly the other day, but I'm sure he's a busy guy, so I can't tell you precisely when it's going to drop.

Regardless, your hostile attitude is out of place, and counterproductive.

Gah! I really wish you wouldn't have locked the OB thread. What an elaborate ruse. The details, my god the details that went into that alt. Would have been fun to talk about.

Yes, I know everyone (including the mod team) would have delighted in seeing the reactions - of some people in particular - keep rolling in. There would have been some laughs at certain people's expense, that's for sure. Alas, somebody had to be the bad guy and lock it. Though if I hadn't, CGI would have done it not long after. Discord still got their licks in though.

    Hey,

I know it's hard to change people's minds on something, but lately I've seen quite a lot of negativity surrounding that one movie and it's something I can only wish I could deal with in any way. It isn't likely of course, as opinions aren't easy to change... but it annoys me when people can only see something as bad and don't understand the other side of the coin.

I might go on a little mission here telling this to everyone who disliked it, and maybe that's really stupid and makes me almost look like someone who's trying to spread an opinion like a religion, but I really just want people to understand. I'm not good at analyzing things objectively though, so that's hard for me to do - luckily, it has been done by someone else:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VulkN5OLEM

I recommend you watch this video whenever you settle down and are willing to maybe give GotG Vol. 2 another chance. It's a long one, because it goes in-depth in explaining a lot of why I love this movie and why I think anyone who loves this movies does, so if you go into it with a closed mind it'll be pretty much useless.

    Good night.

Well this video explains the overarching theme of the movie, and why it resonated with this particular person. It's not like I wasn't well aware of said theme though. I can very much appreciate that this theme would have a strong impact on certain people, and thus they would look very fondly on this movie, especially if they already loved the characters from the first movie, but for me it's a big miss.

Not because of the theme in and of itself, but because I feel it is badly executed for the most part, and also has a bit too much weight placed on it, given the context of the movie franchise it's placed in here. The original Guardians is such a light hearted, shallow (and I don't mean this in a bad way here) romp of a movie. It just wanted to make people smile, laugh, and give them a visual spectacle. Basically, it was the perfect blockbuster, popcorn flick. Then the sequel comes along, and opens very much the same way, picking up the torch for a good 20 minutes or so, but then something happens. Pretty much the moment the movie first cuts to Yondu, the movie does a switcheroo and tries to become this sort of space soap opera.

The woman in this video actually inadvertently explains the problem with this movie, when she points how the first movie treats certain character traits as a positive, fun thing for the purpose of audience enjoyment, and then this movie flips it around into something negative, while still trying to have it's cake and make a lot of jokes on the back of said traits. It's not very well thought out in my opinion. She also, rightly, calls out how the movie tries to have to both ways even with it's own overarching theme of abusive parenthood, making it serious, drama filled character arc for several characters, while also turning into a joke to prop up the laugh quota in the middle of the movie with another character. There's a dichotomy there, both within this movie on it's own, and the way it treats the established tone of the original (which is reaffirmed in the opening of this one) that simply doesn't work for me.

I have other, more nitpicky issues with it as well, but I'll save those for the thread when we do the rewatch. All that said though, I still love the characters overall, and I'm still looking forward to seeing what they do with the franchise in the future.

    on 29 December 2017

Though opening might feel very similar to the first movie, it's exactly the egotism and immaturity the characters show in that portion of it that kickstarts the whole story and the way in which they develop.

Your problem with Vol. 2 is basically that it goes against what its predecessor did, then. I can understand that, and respect that, but personally that's all the more reason I loved it - I dig how the movie wasn't afraid to change itself, and more importantly its characters. The original GotG already had this complex emotional stuff under the rug, so by taking this stuff and tackling it head on in Vol. 2 it made the movie a lot more intense. I'd much rather have that than have GotG be forever a "shallow romp", even if one with deeper underlying tones.

    on 29 December 2017

I'd like to believe most people would find more enjoyment in their 2nd watching of the movie, as I've seen many of those, but I'm not sure it applies here. Since you want to talk about the negatives and will "have" to wait 4 months for it, I think it's hard to then watch the movie in a different mindset. But I'm still hopeful.

    on 29 December 2017

Well diverting to a certain extent from the first movie wouldn't have been an issue, I just don't feel it was done particularly well, as I said. The way it just flips the switch at the drop of a hat from the light hearted tone in the first 20 minutes or so, to just going balls deep in the melodrama was really jarring. Like one second it's all laughs, and then the next thing you know, that amusing blue space pirate from the first one is suddenly getting this sad scene about being an outcast from some larger group of space pirates, and he's shunned, and won't get a legit space pirate burial, and Silvester Stalone's Expendable character is in this for some reason.....and I was just sitting there thinking....I don't care. Then from there on it was just a barrage of underdeveloped sub plots that I didn't find particularly compelling, until the inevitable reveal of Ego as the movie's main villain.

And I actually like Yondu a lot as a character, and I love the actor who plays him, but I just feel like that was one of many plots that could have been handled so much better. To pick up from all we saw of Yondu in the last one and then go straight to this damaged, sad person was so bizarre. If they had instead started him off hunting Starlord and the Guardians for tricking him at the end of the last movie, and then transitioned that into showing them leniency due to his feelings for Peter, and the mutiny, and somebody else on his crew pointing out that this was why he wasn't a true ravage, etc....it would have been so much more organic. The way it was presented was so forced, and I feel that way about much of the movie, but I'm just using this as an example, because that's sort of where it all starts.

Also, on an unrelated note, when did Gamora become so ridiculously fucking strong?! In the first movie she was fist fighting Peter, and her blows were pretty tame (don't tell me she was holding back either, cus she tries to kill him before Rocket and Groot intervene), and now suddenly she can hold Drax with one hand while he's dangling out a crashing space ship, hitting every single tree in his way for like a mile or so. With that kind of strength she could probably knock the Hulk through a building, nvm kill Peter in a single jab.

    on 29 December 2017

That's a fair point. I think the first time I saw it I was also a bit confused with how Yondu is instantly shown in a sad scene given what he was like prior, and it really is sort of a switch that just gets flipped out of nowhere (though I see that switch as the moment the movie truly begins). However, it's important for the rest of the movie that this happens, because if they showed his full transition it'd not only have to make the movie longer, but also there would be a problem where it'd get repetitive because Rocket also undergoes mostly the same arc, just at a different period. You see, what Rocket goes through the course of the movie is mostly what Yondu went through off-screen, so by taking advantage of that time gap between Vol. 1 and Vol, 2 they managed to give Rocket (a more important character) a very satisfying arc through Yondu's help or parentage of sorts - because Yondu saw too much of himself in Rocket and wanted that to change before Rocket went down the same path as him. I think it created a really cool dynamic and personally I find the Rocket/Yondu arc to be the strongest emotional pillar of the movie.

    on 29 December 2017

I actually would say that the arc between Gamora and her sister is the strongest. It's the only one that I feel was handled really well.

    on 29 December 2017

I have a particular problem with the way they handled that arc and it's the expository scene between involving Nebula and Kraglin. That's the only scene I would outright delete from the movie if I could, because it 1. provides no relevant information we don't get elsewhere, 2. makes no sense for Nebula's character to suddenly open up to a dude she certainly has no respect for, and 3. takes away all the impact the later scene between her and Gamora could have, by making only Gamora (and not the audience) surprised. Other than that, I think they handled it very well - but as you'd know, I think they handled everything well, so there's that. But the stuff that brings out the tears full force is definitely more concentrated on the Yondu/Rocket arc.

Now this is a nice surprise. I absolutely love Dragon Age: Origins, and it's by far the best modernization of the classic D&D videogame adventures in the vein of Baldur's Gate and the likes.

Have I never mentioned my love of DA:O on here before? I've played through that game so many times. I just love it to bits. I think it's also the last AAA game to come out that I consider a true RPG.

    on 28 November 2017

Maybe you have, but I must have missed it then. Especially when nowadays if one thinks of Dragon Age unfortunately Inquisition (or Bioware's fuck ups) comes up, instead of the better prequel.
I recall making a playthrough for almost every single background and exploring semi-endless possibilities within quests. It's honestly surprising just how far sometimes you can go with certain quests, or how much everything changes depending on how you undertake some.

There's some other great RPGs on consoles, but I agree that very few come close to what Origins achieved. It's a shame Bioware seem to have lost their touch.

    on 28 November 2017

Ya almost every time I replay it I discover some things I missed previously. It's a beautiful thing. I'll forever be saddened by how much EA set the franchise back when they bought Bioware and made them rush 2 out with like 11 months dev time. Still, I'm hopeful it is getting back on track, as Trespasser left Inquisition in a really nice place, and I do continue to love the lore of the universe. EA just needs to stop fucking with Bioware. I still believe in them as a studio.
