I'm curious... which ports of Wii U games wouldn't make sense?

The WiiU is a dead platform with no further software sales, on Switch these titles can bring in additional revenue and profit.

As long as the revenue is higher than the porting costs, every port makes sense.

Most ports should also be quite easy, only some rare Wii U games with asynchronous gameplay (which need more than one display) would be a bit more complicated). But they would work with two (or more) Switches, so they could advertise Nintendo Online.

Nintendoland included in the Nintendo Online subscription would be the way to go.

If you read the rest of my post you'll see what I mean. I was also specifically talking about ports in the context of this year and the ways in which some of these titles wouldn't necessarily fit. We've had one Mario port this year; Mario Maker had a unique version for 3DS so I'd expect that Switch gets a unique version too; Pikmin 3 is more likely to get a sequel given Miyamoto's comments about a fourth game; Monolith Soft have already ruled out Xenoblade Chronicles X.

Yes, porting Wii U games in general has been good business - but that doesn't mean every major Wii U title will get ported and it doesn't mean every Wii U title makes sense in any given moment of the release schedule.

Monolith Soft ruled out a port made by them... Xenoblade Chronicles 3D for New3DS was ported by Monster Games if I'm correct, why couldn't be the same with Xenoblade Chronicles X?

Some of these suggested ports don't make much sense or have been ruled out. With Mario Maker and Pikmin 3 it makes more sense for Nintendo to make new entries, given 3DS got its own version of Mario Maker, so I would expect Switch to get one too. Pikmin 4 has been talked about in the past as nearly finished - so it may be ready to launch any time soon. Nintendo have already ported one Wii U Mario game this year, so I think that rules out 3D World. Xenoblade Chronicles X has more or less been ruled out by Monolith Soft themselves given the scale and expense of porting it.

I could see the HD Zelda remasters coming at some point - but several journalists and 'insiders' are expecting a 2D Zelda this year, so that potentially rules them out for 2019.

I think the next Wii U port will be Wonderful 101. It was hinted at by Platinum last year and they've said they will have a busy 2019. We shouldn't rule out seeing more than one Wii U port later this year - but I don't think the list above are especially strong candidates.

Mario Maker and Pikmin 3 are totally different kind of games, saying that there is no point releasing Pikmin 3 because Pikmin 4 is coming is same like saying there is no point releasing any remaster which sequel is already out or that is coming. Pikmin 3 is game with story and campaign, so Pikmin 4 can be quite different game compared to Pikmin 3, and actualy Pikmin 3 could be used like marketing tool for Pikmin 4, not to mentione that Pikmin 3 is one of best games that didnt had popularity and sales that deserved.

Mario Maker is different kind of game, focus is on making and playing levels, so doesn't make sense to port Mario Maker and to release Mario Maker 2, and making so Mario Maker 2 is just too easy, just few new modes and features and you have sequel.

I definitely expecting at least one Wii U remaster this year (even 2 are possible), my bet is on Pikmin 3 or Mario 3D World ports.

-Mario Maker will get sequel most likely but doesnt make too much sense to release it this year because we alredy have 2D Mario out this year.
-sources saying that 2D Zelda coming this year, so I dont think Nintendo would want to release some kind of Zelda remaster in same year
-Xenoblade Chronicles X is still possible but it doesn't seems we could have it any time soon.
-IMO every other game is less possible.

Yeah, they could include Pikmin 3 to the special edition of Pikmin 4, like they bundled Bayonetta 1 + 2. Or offer a "Pikmin Trilogy HD" additional to Pikmin 4 (similar to the Uncharted Trilogy on PS4 a few months before Uncharted 4).

It doesn't matter who ports it - it's the size and scale of the challenge which makes it unlikely. Thats what Tetsuya Takahashi said. You acknowledged it yourself: a port needs to make sense in terms of resources expended. Monster Games also don't work with Nintendo any more. And, with Wii U titles ported to Switch by Nintendo, the trend seems to be that the original team are involved. EPD did Kart 8 DX and worked with NST on Captain Toad, for example, while Retro Studios handled Tropical Freeze and Team Ninja/Omega handled Hyrule Warriors. Bandai Namco handled Pokken Tournament DX. The clear pattern on Switch is for the original studio to at least co-develop the port or handle it themselves entirely. Monolith Soft seem to be working on two original projects already, too.

I can understand why people want Chronicles X, but there's clear evidence that isn't happening yet.

Fair enough on the Pikmin front. My personal feeling is that, given a fourth main game was discussed openly and supposedly nearly complete, Nintendo would concentrate on releasing that rather than porting the third game. But I accept the point you're making - it could be a candidate for 2019. I'd expect at least one Wii U port, but I'll stick with Wonderful 101 as my guess.

I get your point, what I am saying is that Pikmin 3 is great game and one best Wii U games (alongside SM3DW) that's still not ported, and people would gladly buy Pikmin 3 and Pikmin 4, also Pikmin 3 could be used like markeing too for later Pikmin 4.

Thats not how its works, Bayonetta 1/2 are both Wii U games, so it made sense to port them both. Pikmin 4 is brand new game, there is no chance Nintendo will bundle Pikmin 3 with Pikmin 4 ,or they will include Pikmin 3 in Pikmin Trilogy HD when they can just port Pikmin 3 and sell it for $60. If you hoping for some kind of bundle, best you can hope is Zelda WW/TP HD bundle and Metroid Trilogy HD.

This is what Emily Rogers said yestrday:

Indeed. Five is the floor (minimum) -- not the ceiling. The ceiling could be as high as 11 or 12.

It's difficult to give an exact number because any game can be pushed back to 2020 for marketing/scheduling reasons.

Let me try to explain this better.

The "Most likely" game announcements for 2019. (70% chance or higher)

1. Mystery game #1
2. Mystery game #2
3. Mystery game #3
4. Mystery game #4
5. eShop game #1 (formerly Mystery game #5)
6. Mystery Wii U port #1 (2013 title)
7. eShop game #2
8. New Labo Kit

The "Maybe" games for 2019. (The wild card titles - 50% chance or less)

9. Retro Studios secret game (this is assuming it wasn't canned)
10. Metroid Prime Trilogy (assuming Zell's info and Imran's info are correct)
11. Mystery Wii U port #2

If they get the engine running properly on the Switch, most assets won't have to be touched. It's not a Wii port where most textures have to be upgraded. The higher resolution alone (when docked) and some antialiasing would be enough to enhance the graphic quality a lot, the smaller display (undocked) would hide a lot of unwanted artifacts while delivering the same performance as the Wii U version.
