Forums - Sony Discussion - Is Sony saving VR?

I actually don't feel like Sony has done very much for VR at all. They're making the hardware available, but they haven't put any real money into software development. That's the thing that first parties are generally good for when we talk about supporting hardware. Sony has proven more or less useless in that regard.

Sony developed and published the best VR game of the year, Astro Bot (winner at the Game Awards at least). And they release new good VR games frequently. You usually hear the opposite "Oh, they announced too many VR games, I don't care about those" after each of their conferences.

I would love to know who, for you, pushes more VR software than Sony. And I mean real software, not "5 years old game: VR mode"...

I've been on the bridge for a while about buying one, i know I'll get one eventually, just haven't pulled the trigger yet. I'd have loved to see Sony releasing some VR games focused around their first party titles like Sly Cooper or Jak. Like try reboot a franchise or something.

I think oculus quest can make the final push to make VR a big entertainment system.
psvr need a playstation system, so this can't be the standard for the industry.

From a publishers perspective? Oculus of course. But Sony seems to have much better PR when it comes to reviews for their VR games:

Meanwhile HTC / Valve (HTC Vive + Vive Pro) and Microsoft (WMR headsets) don't seem very interested to add good games for their VR hardware (or VR hardware in general). The Lab is still awesome, but I would have expected much more from Valve.

With 1438 reviews vs 188 it looks like Sony is pushing VR a lot more! PR is a big part of pushing the medium forward. Why does Oculus get so little attention? PSVR doesn't do much better yet at least I'm running into commercials for it on tv (never ever saw one for OR) it's on display in stores (don't see OR anywhere, only online) and some bigger game sites are actually reviewing some of their games. For example Eurogamer has had a dedicated section for PSVR for about a year, although it seems BC for XBox still gets more attention. (DF doesn't analyze VR games is the difference I guess)

i am just going by Wikipedia here, but in 2016 Sony published 9 VR compatible games. MS published 6 X1 games. in 2017, the numbers were 6 and 8 respectively. In 2018, its is 5 to 4.

Now these numbers are not 100% accurate since I am doing this quickly but Sony has been publishing roughly the same amount of PSVR titles as MS is publishing games for the X1.

I would disagree that Sony isn't putting in the effort for VR software. They have even built a new studio just for VR (granted they have not announced their first game yet)

My point is not that Sony isn't releasing VR games.  My point is that of all the developers out there, the one that you would expect to make the big budget system sellers is Sony.  Yet, they have failed to do so.  There really aren't any system seller VR games, unfortunately,

Nobody except the hardware guys can possibly come up with justification for putting big development money into VR game development, as the install bases are too small for big budget games by third parties to be profitable.  Sony is the leader in VR hardware sales, which would usually lead to some big games that in turn drive further hardware sales.  We've seen it with PS4, for sure.  But, they haven't done so for PSVR.

That shows me that for one reason or another, Sony has determined that there isn't big money to be made in VR right now.  And that spells problems for the future of VR.

I think VR is here to stay and doesn’t really need saving.
The adoption rate might not put the shelves on fire, but there is definitely a crowd for this type of gaming experience.

It won’t replace standard gaming, and it doean’t have to. Both offer something different, and both aren’t necessarily for everyone.

Personally, I enjoy VR in its current form and can’t wait to see where the tech will go from here. I wouldn’t play exclusively in VR anyway, but for some types of games, like single player first person games like RE VII and Skyrim, and other games made exclusively for VR like the stellar Astro Bot, I certainly wouldn’t want to miss out. So the PSVR has been a very good addition to my gaming life so far and I haven’t once regretted my purchase.

I am mostly buying the must haves (still need to pick up Tetris Effect and Beat Saber), because there’s a lot of crappy stuff coming out. But the must haves are really something else and lots of fun to experience. Some games like WipeOut may not be built first for VR, but the inclusion of the option to play them in VR elevates the experience to a whole new level. The games are made much more immersive and in turn much better via this option.

Once 5G become mainstream and a lot of country using it, and cloud will be normalizes and at that time people will able to stream games and not worrying to buy hardware or consoles . The reason why i relating cloud and VR is because both are fundamental future platform. people will just buy VR device and running it through streaming and cloud device. Also 5G are also important for wireless VR head set so it will not be dependent on wire anymore.

Probably is to arrogant to say SONY save VR but i can pretty much say that SONY contribute a lot to bring VR on mainstream or is just a semantic and can be debatable. The important thing VR is not a gimmick , far from what people said on it first impression. Also SONY also contribute to introduce consoles gaming to VR , bring alot of potential and cheap price and easy and accessibility.

I am agree with your narration but SONY is not alone, even a failure Virtual Boy bring hopes and dreams, kinnect, Wii mote and Eye Toy bring a step to the motion tech maybe you can argue with me. But everything has contribution. But I hope SONY will be step a head to bring VR to next level, and bring more people to enjoy VR and other company will follow.

I agree with you that every mistake or technology related to it helped improve the idea. Also that Sony didn't save or create, but is a very important contributor, even more when they offer the cheapest entry with still quite a lot of quality and is the highest seller.
