Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Iwata 'TURNED down Natal tech' back in 2007 --Good decision or not? (rumor)

Yea, we already knew this. But its important that we are reminded every once in a while.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

I think at the time he made the right choice. If i was him price would not of worried me as much as the latency issue. Especially after seeing that HALF LIFE 2 demo.

natal will be good as long as developers don't go releasing ever genre out there for it. They need to focus on simple games for casuals and behind doors experiment on other genres and not rush them out. If they don't turn out no one needs to know about it.

This happened on the Wii. EVERYONE went for the motion controls when some games NEED to still use classic controls in my honest opinion.

I have read something similar to this awhile ago...............anyway is it a good idea they did that? IMO, yes. Why? They wanted to innovate motion control more and to me that's exactly what they did with the "Wiimote". Much better with the now "Wii Motion Plus".

What people didn't know about this? It was like public knowledge lol.

CES when the 3D camera was introduced IGN talked to some of the higher ups at Nintendo (I believe it was Reggie) and talked about they had looked into tech like that but decided against it since it lacked buttons and something people could physically hold (plus the ability to adapt to older styles of gameplay too)

I'd look it up, but I've tried to stay away from IGN lately, shouldn't be too hard to find, it was around the time Wii Speak was unofficially "announced" which was like early 08 I believe.

nentendo should've bought the tachnology and held onto it. Of course they didn't know how the wii was going to take of back then, so purchasing the technology may not have been the wisest of endevours. Nintendo could have really had a tight grasp on the whole motion control thing by now.

Definitely a good decision. If natal takes up 10% of 360's processing power (which might be a big problem), then the Wii's going to be a slug with Natal.

so you think Microsoft will be able to make natal a success even after having nintendo, the gaming innovator, turn down the tech years before mircosoft even knew about it?

hello how are you.

Even if Natal is a success, which I don't think it will be, it's not like Iwata will kick himself for passing on it. The Wii Remote was a more than successful alternative to warrant a good decision.

Full body waggle FTL....

Yay hand waggling wiimote FTW!

Gaming make me feel GOOD!

Why would Nintendo need it if they already had the Wii mote, and it was just one year after the Wii was released?

Also, if this thing eats around 10% of 360's processing power, it would've taken (at the very least) 60% on the Wii... that wouldn't leave room for games.
