CES when the 3D camera was introduced IGN talked to some of the higher ups at Nintendo (I believe it was Reggie) and talked about they had looked into tech like that but decided against it since it lacked buttons and something people could physically hold (plus the ability to adapt to older styles of gameplay too)
I'd look it up, but I've tried to stay away from IGN lately, shouldn't be too hard to find, it was around the time Wii Speak was unofficially "announced" which was like early 08 I believe.
