Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Capcom: 'If you make a good game, people will buy it'

I disagree.

Many great games have flopped sales-wise due to a lack of advertising, or being niche... On ALL platforms.

I would say that the sales of a game were never hurt by being good.

Okami

To lavish praise upon this title, the assumption of a common plateau between player and game must be made.  I won't open my unworthy mouth.

I second this.

By the way... captain obvious is wrong. Not all good games sells well... overall Wii games.

MY ZELDA COLLECTION

Also, good marketing never hurts.
It's very rare that you'll get a game that combines these two that isn't niche on the Wii.

I'm going to agree with Mike_intellivision but up it a bit

Make it a good game
Make it a unique experience
Make it a game your audience is interested in
Make sure they know about it

The infamous Psychonauts and Okami are testiment to this. Great games, unique, people knew about them, they just weren't the type of games people were looking to play.

TvsC looks to be an excellent game (I'll own it shortly) but it's hardly unique, even on Wii, and I doubt most Wii owners will care, sadly, even if they did know about it. Really this game should be an easy million seller. Anything less is a shame.

It should because of how good it is, but because of the genre it is in, that is very difficult. No game in the Vs Capcom series has ever sold that much.

Even headlining fighters like Soul Calibur 4 (1.15m PS3/1.35m 360) and Street Fighter 4 (1.62m PS3/1.39m 360) just pass the mark, and those are deeply established and promoted.

TvC got good promo too, thats why the preorders went up nearly 400% Week over Week (2.8k to 11k) and sold 33% of the amount of preorders already made (were 33k, now 45k). It should have a great first week over ~60k.

It's a sad state of affairs when we're calling 60k 'great'.  600k is great.  60K would be 'great' for a little known, niche title from a small developer which is not the case here.

TvC wouldn't really have any way of managing a 600k first week LOL It could manage 600k over time though. Besides, the ads only came on the 21st of January, 2 days after the preorder numbers were recorded.

If it was prominently advertised for three weeks and got a full minute spot several times during the AFC/NFC Championships like Mass Effect 2 did....maybe it could've managed something a little closer.

I think we're on the same page here.  I realize it'll be lucky to hit 600k ltd ww I'm just disappointed by that reality because like HoTD, Marvel Vs Capcom was a huge hit in arcades and I'd like to think all those casual people that played MvsC in the arcades would run out and get this.   I suspect if Capcom released the original Marvel vs Capcom (1&2) on Wii for $30 it'd outsell TvsC because people would remember the fun they had in the arcades and buy it - cheap.     TvsC falls into much the same boat as HoTD:O compared to Hotd 2&3, it has the known IP but isn't the same game as people remember and it's sales won't be as great because of it.

Which is too bad, because by all accounts it's every bit as fun.   Who knows, maybe word of mouth will give this game looooong legs but we didn't see that in Japan.

MVC2 did okay, better than TatsuCap probably will, but it wasn't a blockbuster.  Hell, it was most likely under 600k WW itself on PS2.

Actually that's Captain Wrong, not Captain Obvious.

Captain Obvious would say that many good games have failed in sales... on all platforms.

Such wiser words have never been spoken, with ya all the way. and not just this gen, last gen to.

While I would love for that statement to be true, it simply isn't.
There are many many phenomenal games that have sold very poorly or aren't even sold at all
(free but unknown of)

Actually I would change it to say "If you advertise anything enough, people will buy it"
Seriously people, marketing has such a powerful influence over every choice and decision that we make in life.... it is disgusting to be honest but this is commercialism for better or worse ;)

Do yourself a favor and try some games that you would never have tried with an open heart. The games that you never really gave a shot and just listened to one 'game journalists' opinion and then formed yours around that...... you might surprise yourself sometimes :)

sorry for the rant

But when other developers are claiming nothing can sell on the Wii, what is the threshold?  I mean, companies like EA, Capcom and Ubisoft are claiming their profit margins are failing, yet they have million sellers on the Wii?  Where exactly do you draw the line?  5 million?  10 Million?  Their games on the HD consoles aren't even coming close to those numbers either, yet the Wii is getting blamed for their financial problems?

Frankly, I think when a Wii game sells over 50,000 copies in its first week, its doing pretty good.  Especially since Wii games 1) Hardly get advertised (if at all) 2) Are proven to have good legs and 3) Are more likely to see sales spikes over the long run than an HD game (which are more front-loaded and rely on heavy advertising....which Wii games usually don't get).

Six upcoming games you should look into:
