Forums - PC Discussion - Why Piracy si so high (Mass Effect 2)

So Mass Effect 2 for the PC is already out and up for download.

-1 week earlier

-No SecuROM crap

-No GFWL crap

-No other DRM crap

-Easy as hell installation (compared to GFWL and all that)

So how do publishers actually expect people NOT to pirate given that pirated copies are better than retail in every aspect?

If by "better in every respect" you mean "exactly the same product minus a couple of copy protection schemes amounting to such a minor annoyance that anyone who uses them as an excuse to pirate software immediately comes across as not just cheap but intellectually bankrupt and void of a moral compass" then yes.

No i mean "anyone who knows anything about computers will realize that SecuROM is a serious breach and GFWL is a huge thorn in people's lives" then yeah, it is better in every way.

I never planned on purchasing mass effect 2, didn't really enjoy the first one. If this was like any other game I purchase with SecuROM, I would purchase the game and then never take the hard copy out of the box.

Mass Effect 2 has GFWL?

Damn, I was thinking of buying it after it drops in price too. Oh well.

EDIT: And you can also add to the OP that the pirated version will likely always have the Steam preorder bonus - where as that won't be available for purchase after it releases.  So even more fail on EA's part, really.

Which, speaking of which... why is there a preorder bonus exclusive to Steam, and yet GFWL integration?  That's rather counter-intuitive, why not just integrate it with Steam? -_-

I'm not sure i actually enjoyed the first Mass Effect, which is a really unpleasant feeling. Everything was well done, and i can't point to anything specific that i didn't like, but i can never really remember enjoying myself while i played it... I might wait for this to drop in price and...acquire a non-minefield-rigged copy after picking it up, everything in me wants to give it a chance lol

ME2 isn't infected by SecuROM, GrWL or any other DRM crap other than a disc check.

At present, the 360 version is being pirated at a ratio of 1:2 over the PC version. It's still going to sell like stink, though. And the best version is on the PC, yet again.

Because people should hold themselves up to a high level of decency rather than the dirt I walk on.  Of course considering they don't, the rest of us pay for it... literally.

You are assuming here that piracy is morally bad. There's your first problem.
