Zelda isn't perfect as a game (maybe it's perfect for someone but nobody said that it's perfect) but Link SHOULDN'T have a voice, it's part of the characterization of the character.
Do *YOU think Link NEEDS a voice in the next ZELDA???
NO, I prefer Link stay a silent hero | 129 | 76.33%
YES, I'd prefer if Link had a voice | 40 | 23.67%

Khuutra said: _honeybadger_ said: I implied nothing of the kind, nor do I need to. Of course, that doesn't mean that I agree with the implication of your sarcasm here (that being that the Zelda series is in desperate need of "fixing"); that is also pretty far off from the truth. Omg Zelda games are perfect and nothing is wrong with them. (sarcasm off) The reason why I put these complains in that post is to destroy the illusion/delusion that Zelda games are perfect, Not prevalent in this topic, not relevant to this topic. Nobody here is operating off of the assumption that Zelda games are perfect. Some say that Link doesn't need to talk, and that the dynamic is not broken. There is a big, enormous difference between these two ideas. Heck in regards to the gameplay they are worst than the gameboy zelda games. Again, your opinion on the state of Zelda games outside of the fact of Link talking vs. not has absolutely nothing to do with the topic at hand. Thats unacceptable considering that when you have a game on a more capable hardware you should be able to do more for the game than just Motion Control. This is an even weirder statement, because it seems to imply that there is an absolute metric of quality to which you are referring, which there isn't. Doesnt mean anything unless you are able to express what it does for the game having a stupid looking character, really do tell because thats something I would like to know. Simple: Link's character is built around the idea that he doesn't talk, and his personality is (traditionally) a personality of absence rather than one of projection: that is to say, his personality, like classic silent protagonists, was (originally) built up by a mixture of the expectations of the player and the reactions of other characters to him. Keeping away from establishing his personality in this way is actually something Nintendo has striven for, goign out of their way in several games so that characters - in many situations - are responding to Link as an engine of actions, not as a personality. Now, that's not been true for a few games since Wind Waker (and, arguably, Ocarina of Time) in that much of his personality is now established through his expressions. Why are his expressions worth anything? Well, for the first part, they harken back to a character-establishing mode which is unique to visual media and which hasn't be prevalent since the silent film era, so it's interesting from an artistic perspective for several reasons For the second part, it stands apart from other character-defining modes while not sacrificing any particular amount of personality The third part is that it's often very entertaining: Twilight Princess Link is very expressive, and the Wind Waker style Link is often hilarious. So there you go |
Khuutra, my post on this matter dont refer to the Truth that you formed by yourself or by others. They refer to my opinion of having played the games in questions nothing else, and I didnt pretended something else than express my opinion on the matter.
In regards to the addition that you see from having him looking like a stupid mute (or silent character as you refer) I think is just a fancy way of saying I like it because I see some subtle art like qualities that I prefer over the other more simple means of expressing emotion.
I differ from you on the opinion that silent Link represents a Good Mute/silent/absent character, if thats nintendos goal then the effect is lost on me, because I have seen way better and more expresive silent characters than Link, in other mediums and by comparison make him look like a stupid looking mute character.
Link very expressive in Twilight Princess; we must have played a different game. Link saying ahh, ooh, hiah etc doesnt make him very expresive, and his reaction shots looked stupid to me, but I guess thats the reason ART is based on subjective appreciation. Wind Waker Link was better at expressing emotions but that has something more to do with the art style than anything else
I voted yes... but its got to be done right... Not a whiny little boys voice and not a butch roid man voice. He still needs to be timid/shy too and rarely speak. (basically just speaking when spoken to)

If you're not pretending to hold to some higher or absolute standard, that's fine, but this still isn't the topic for it. Though in the future you might want to keep in mind how the tone of your statements informs the way that they're interpreted.
There's nothing more subtle about facial expressions vs. voices, it's just... different. The more artsy part of it is how they characterize the silent protagonist, but that has been changing from game to game over time. It's not a static thing.
It's fine that your opinion differs, but you haven't really supported why.
Yes, art and the interpretation of it and reaction to it is very subjective, and bound to vary from person to person. It's a shame that Link as a silent protaonist doesn't appeal to you, but it works fine for me. I don't imagine they'll abandon it, even if they go full voice acting for everything else.
He doesn't need a voice but if they do have Link talk they better do it right! I can see it going either really well or really really bad!! If they bring in someone it better not be high pitched Charles Martinet!!
No, what Khuutra said. Link remains silent, and no English voices, that's for damn sure.
If there must be English voices, there better be minimal talking in the game. By minimal I mean, as little as the NES games. Really.
As for the lack of voices make the game "outdated," please. If people want to push that argument, I can argue that PS3/360 games are outdated because they lack motion tech. It sounds ridiculous, eh?
No. Everyone else can get one (not so sure about Zelda) but not link
