Forums - Gaming - Help from console RPG fans

Hi,

I need help on which RPG's to get for either the 360 or/and PS3.I don't want a debate on what constitutes an RPG, I don't care if it's strategy, turn or action based, Western or Japanese as long as it's an RPG.

For 360 I already have the following (all amazing)-

  • Mass Effect
  • Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
  • Fallout 3
  • Fabe II
  • Lost Odyssey

For PS3 I have the following-

  • Valkyria Chronicles (Reason I'm in love with RPGs again)

Now in the past I really liked JRPGs but this gen I have been falling in love with WRPGs for the first time and I'm very much looking forward to Mass Effect 2 this month (OMG THIS MONTH!!!).

However LO and now VC has made me want to play more JRPGs and I was wondering if my fellow VG Chartz RPG fans could help me decide as there are a lot of them out there and I know that many of them are average to bad so to those of you who like RPGs please can you help me choose wisely.

I've heard the following are worth playing if fans of the genre and have been improved on the later PS3 release....is it worth getting the PS3 versions or are they actually worse?

  • Tales of Vesperia
  • Eternal Sonata
  • Star Ocean IV

The 360 has a number of exclusive JRPGs but of varying quality

  • Blue Dragon- From the makers of LO a game I really liked...will I like BD as well?
  • Last Remnant- Heard mixed reviews.....shall I bother or save myself the hassle?
  • Infinite Undiscovery- Ditto

Another one that interests me is Borderlands- I heard it's an FPS RPG with a much longer and more interesting single player campaign than the average FPS. Is it one worth bothering with as it looks really interesting.

On the PS3 I heard Demons Soul is well worth it. What about Disgaea 3 and Folklore? Can you think of anymore?

As for WRPGs is Risen and Dragons Age worth it on console? I don't have a gaming PC. Any others?

Time is a factor for me as I work full time and only get about 3-5 hours per night from Mon-Fri and of course I have the weekends.

Anyone's help would be much appreciated.

Perhaps a Top Ten list would suffice.

Star Ocean is a contender for best RPG of the gen although the disc swapping required if you want to backtrack is just annoying, the PS3 version will probably be better

Blue Dragon isn't bad but the voice acting is annoying as hell, I seriously couldn't play it after a few hours in...

The Last Remnant is actually really good though, as long as you can install it, it's a great game although the difficulty can jump a lot sometimes which is annoying

Infinite Undiscovery I haven't played much, it's similar to Star Ocean but really nowhere near as good

Blue Dragon also has a turnbased battle system, but much better at the same time.
The characters are annoying, but the art direction by Akira Toriyama easily makes up for that.
It also has really good anime style graphics. Everything is very polished.
It really feels like a game for 10 years old kids often times, but I really enjoyed it nonetheless.

I would even say I liked it more than Lost Odyssey !

Well it depends what you liked about Valkyria, if you enjoyed the focus on strategy and don't need amazing graphics then I would suggest Disgaea 3, it has a hilarious story that does well never taking itself seriously.

The PS3 version of the RPGs you mentioned all have extra content so I would go with the PS3 version if you have choice.

If you want an Action oriented RPG I would suggest Demon's Souls over Folklore, though the story in Folklore is better Demon's Souls is a better overall game.

Star Ocean International has both jp+eng language tracks, so you don't have to rip your ears off to awful dialogue now. Definitely a plus.

Sonata/Vesperia on PS3 have more characters, features so they're all worth buying.

If you want to try Last Remnant, play it on the PC, graphics are WAY better, no slowdowns, etc.

Folklore is an interesting title. It appears to have great production values, and has relatively mixed reviews. I personally enjoyed it. It's not so much an RPG as it is an action/adventure game with very light RPG elements. The world presented in the game is fantastic and they gameplay is fairly straight forward. It is also broken into several chapters with finality, and between each you could easily put down the controller and walk away without being confused when you pick it up to play again later. Plus, there's a sizable amount of DLC that is either free or pretty cheap.

Here's a nice deal btw for Star Ocean 4: http://www.thehut.com/games/platforms/xbox-360/star-ocean-the-last-hope/10044877.html

Oh and don't forget to consider Magna Carta 2 !

Frequently Bought Together-

Edition: Standard Edition

Star Ocean: The Last Hope (Xbox 360) +
The Last Remnant (Xbox 360) +
Infinite Undiscovery (Xbox 360)

Total RRP: £134.97

Price For All Three: £27.47

Nice deal from Amazon for all the Square Enix RPG on 360.

Of the 360 ones, I'd rank them this way:

Dragon Age: Origins
.
.
Tales of Vesperia (wish I had finished it)
Star Ocean (ditto)
Infinite Undiscovery (didn't really care for it)

I'm on a mission to sell "the Witcher" to anyone who hasn't played it though, since you don't have a gaming PC you are spared, but THAT game would go ahead of all those listed.

Oh and Valkyria was a great game!

I could get ES, SO4 and TOV on 360 for less than £60.00 or I could pay double and get the PS3 versions for the extra content. Hmmmm....
