FF V XIII looks more badass...and i got a feeling that this is gonna be better...but lets see...maybe this is gonna be a big letdown....

They are direct sequels, but they are spinoffs in the way that they change the entire core mechanics of the main series, which always have one or two points in common, at least.

The story may have been a direct continuation, but everything else would fall into spinoff category. I think it may not be fair to call them full spinoffs though, that title is reserved to the Crystal Chronicles saga, Mystic Quest, Dissidia and now Versus/Agito/Haerasis

Final Fantasy Versus XIII is not a spin off of FFXIII. They are two coexisting entries within Fabula Nova Crystalis. The only thing binding them is their mythology of Crystals(and apparently Shinigami). They were virtually announced at the same time and comparable budgets. Nomura says do not think of Versus as a spin off but rather a "New Direction", which is what Versus means in latin. Its pretty much at the fork in the road known as 13 you have 3 paths: FFXIII,FF Versus XIII, and FF Agito XIII. I'm thinking SE is waiting to see which one fan's take a liking too best and expect recurring sequals to emulate that.

Versus's story will be darker, and we are all but assured a sad ending. Made even more likely because the story will embody certain elements of Shakespeare and his biggest theme being Tragedy.

Battle system will be the child of Kingdom Hearts meets Advent Children. The game might be Mature rated.

It's considered a spin-off because it's a deviation from the main series. It may center on the Fabula Nuova Crystalis, along with Agito and Haerasis too, but that doesn't make it less of a spinoff.

That being said, it can have the quality to top off any main series FF game, the label "spinoff" is by no means a derogatory label.

Well to be honest, the story is what really matters, not the gameplay when it comes to a sequel, which is why i deem dirge and X-2 sequels over spin-off's.

However yes, Crystal Bearers, Versus XIII, Agito XIII and what not are not related to there main older cousins, making them spin off's, though that doesn't mean storyline nor gameplay well be any lesser to the likes of the numbered final fantasies, for example, i enjoyed dirge of cerberous more then i enjoyed both X, and X-2, and most normal based final fantasies.

I don't know if we can still count Crystal Bearers as a spin-off. The Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles line has 6 games now. I think it has become its own series. You could call it a spin-off series, and possibly Crystal Bearers as a spin-off of the Crystal Chronicles spin-off series though. I like the latter because it abuses the word spin-off so viciously. Spin-off.

OT:
How can we tell until there is some solid info on vXIII? Once we know anything at all about the gameplay, setting, and length it will be possible to judge. Before then it seems kinda silly to try and compare.
