Best FPS/RPG Hybrid Ever?

Borderlands 60 26.32%

Deus Ex 64 28.07%

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl 22 9.65%

System Shock 2 29 12.72%

Other (please mention it) 51 22.37%

Total:226

For me there is no contest, the poll might as well have Deus Ex as all the options.

How can you include Borderlands and one empty space, and not have BioShock or Fallout 3?

I voted Other for BioShock. With Deus Ex a reasonably close second.

Deus Ex all the way. Well, with System Shock 2 right behind it, with STALKER riding it's coattails.

Borderlands is fun but nowhere near that level.

Fallout 3 is also very good, and perhaps it's because it was too sandbox, but it just didn't manage anything like the central narrative Deus Ex or System Shock 2 had.

I suppose Bioshock was okay too, but for me it was way to light on the RPG and was basically an attempt to keep the feel of System Shock 2 but make it way more accessible and FPS orientated. They did a pretty decent job, but I felt it lost just a little too much from the RPG side.

Bioshock is a straight FPS with some customization, not a hybrid.

As for Fallout 3, it's not a hybrid because the shooter mechanics are almost unexistant. There is pretty much no twitch gameplay, and reflexes/hand-eye coordination are not needed. Headshots will not do more damage, and the AI is so pitiful that they're like sitting ducks.

Yah, I guess that's what I was trying to say.  I wish there were more full on FPS/RPG hybrids as I actually really like them, but they always seem to end up more praised that bought, which I guess gives developers pause.

To be fair, there have been almost no real hybrids. The only hybrid I can think of that was a flop was Deus Ex: Invisible Wars.

This year we will have Stalker: Call of Prypriat and Deus Ex 3, so it's not that bad.

To be fair, that was because Invisible War became less of a hybrid and more of an action game. Annoyed a lot of fans.

If you read what Deus Ex 3 is expected to be you will beocme livid and want to murder people. It is saddening how much Deus ex has fallen because of consolification.

Oh well, just get Alpha Protocol instead.

Urg!  I've been avoiding reading up on it, and now I don't whether to ignore it completely or take a peak!  Oh, well, at least I've still got my copy of DE.  I played it again recently, and graphics aside I was impressed how well it held up, the plot and depth of content particulary easily eclipsed anything in more recent titles.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

You don't have to read it. Just don't get your expectations high. Also think of it as something other than a Deus Ex. That's how I can live with its existance, just from the sound of it.

Most who played System Shock 2 and BioShock will agree SS2 was the better game (there's bound to be a few exceptions ).

OT: A difficult choice between Deus Ex and System Shock 2, but what the hell, SS2 it is. Though both games are in my all-time favorites.

Just wait a few weeks for Mass Effect 2

Mass Effect is a TPS RPG, not an FPS RPG.

I generally regard FPS as just a shooter, and not distinguish that much between FPS and TPS

Huh? There is a colossal difference between first-person and third-person shooters.

No there really isn't. TPS is FPS for pussies. That's about the only difference.

WTF? TPS changes the experience for newer gameplay possibilities. Elitists are so linear in the head.

Melee combat. However then it's not really a shooter. As long as it's an actual shooter where you shoot with guns, I stand by my statement. I'd love to hear some of these gameplay possibilities.

He put it in an extremely harsh way, I agree. But it is true that TPS's offer less immersion.
