I like Zelda a lot, especially Ocarina of Time cos of it's a big, almost open-world, but sadly I never finished it. I got stuck too many times, didn't have a guide or walk-through so I became frustrated and quit about halfways when I was stuck in a dungeon.

I was going to pick it up again a few years later with an internet walk-through available, but then for some reason the old game-save wasn't left on my N64 anymore.

How open or linear are Windwaker & Twiligte Princess compared to OOT?

TWW is hugely open. Try it, it's the best Zelda IMO.

Can it be bought thru virtual console?

No. You can, however, play wind waker on the wii if you still have a gamecube memory card and gamecube controller. and yes, Wind Waker is hugely open - even if it is an ocean. Plenty of legit exploration in Wind Waker =)

It's funny how you should mention that you believe OOT was a great game, but TP seems like the same old thing.

Nintendo released a couple of great Zelda games between OOT and TP.  They included Manjoras Mask and Wind Waker.  They had innovative and original concepts that really evolved the series as a whole.  The problem?  Many people didn't like it.  They scoffed at not being able to play as adult link in Manjoras Mask.  They criticized it's lack of dungeons (only 4) and the time traveling system was completely not what they were used to.  They laughed at Wind Waker's graphical style, and how the game took place on an ocean.  Btw: some of the islands in WW were bigger than the areas of OOT.

Basically what I am saying is that Nintendo delivered two amazing games between OOT and TP.  The fans complained, saying that they wanted to play as adult Link in an experience similar to OOT.  The fans wanted it, and Nintendo delivered.  What you recieved was an amazing game, but one that didn't do much different than it's predecessor.  Then, people criticized it for not doing much different than it's predecessor.

To summarize, people complain when things change.

I totally agree with this. I actually said something similar in a different thread. People just love to complain. If TP is so terribly outdated and stale, why did it sell so much more than both MM and WW, two wholly fresh and innovative Zelda titles? Evidently it's not so bad as a LOT of people make it seem.

Also, I don't really get what they complain about concerning TP anyway, imo it is, on the whole, a much different game from OOT. It's much, much more elaborate and evolved than the foundation that OOT laid. If you compare the two, yes, there are of course similarities, durh, but TP feels like a much larger, more epic and more complete experience than OOT ever was. It does so much more so much better, people complaining and finding it far inferior to OOT are honestly just looking at the N64 game through rose-tinted glasses.

Of course, that's not to say I didn't love OOT. In fact, I love all Zelda games, and so far, I've found each and every installment to be fresh and exciting. Now if anyone wants to talk franchises gone stale, take a look at Pokémon, THERE's a franchise that's the textbook example of unoriginality. In fact, I could name a long, long list of franchises that fit that description, most of them popular 'core' HD games.

Well, to be honest, you're right. There are plenty of core franchises that have done the same thing over and over again, yet Zelda seems to be the one getting the most criticism for this. I think the main issue however is the fact that expectations are constantly rising, and Nintendo has trouble changing or "evolving" enough to meet these expectations. With Zelda, its a very serious, respected franchise. People expect it to keep rivaling the competition, but the team behind Zelda seem to have trouble doing this, or don't understand just how seriously people want Zelda to be equally matched with what else is out there in terms of balance, freedom, difficulty, depth and ect.

Wind Waker actually would've been better if it didn't have such a rough start with the Cel-shaded haters. It actually was very good for its time, and it did make some obvious improvements while realizing some of its own minor flaws. (what game doesn't have those?)

Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask were simply the height of what you could get for a video game out there for their time, but Wind Waker and Twilight Princess didn't evolve quite enough compared to what was releasing around it. Its honestly Zelda against the world, because it gets compared to numerous games that aren't even of the same franchise.

I know, it's kind of a strange situation with Zelda, because it's such a revered franchise, people want it to maintain that quality and remain similar, but at the same time, they want it to continually change. And when it does, it's either too much change or not enough change. Honestly, like I said, people just love to complain, and especially about a franchise with a status such as Zeld. (Then again, I can't think of any other franchises with that status )

Anyway, as long as every single Zelda game that releases still manages to get review scores of almost unanimous 9's and 10's, I think Nintendo's doing fine. I love 'em all, and can't wait to see what Nintendo will do for the new Wii game. Also, on the whole voice-acting thing, I'm convinced Nintendo will include voice-acting this time around...

And @ Slimebeast, no you can't, it's a GameCube game, those don't appear on the VC. You can get it for cheap off the internet nowadays though, and play it on your Wii, so...

Well I personally don’t like Zelda well for a whole other set of reasons but still what were you doing playing 2 secs at a time ?
Also don’t like Mario(every time I see P.Peach getting kidnapped I just feel like finding her so I can stab here 100 times and blame it on Luigi), Pokemon (this game is evil always sucks me but sadly never finish it), FF IV for the DS (Dam this game is BORING and so is FF III, strangely love VII,VIII,IX,X).

And still haven’t decided on Dragon Quest IV, I for the time it came out it was actually quite good … yeah now that I think about it kind like it :D .

I don't dislike Zelda, but it's certainly not my type of game. I'm just not a big action/adventure game fan. If they added some real RPG elements to it, I might change my mind.

Hey, i m back, i just woke up at 11 AM, had breakfast and started the Metroid Prime series, so far, i like the focus it has, i have only killed the first boss and got into the ruins stage.

Back to topic, it is not like i hate Zelda (i wrote, dislikes : P ), i appreciate it as a good franchise, the OoT was a huge step forward at the time, but right now, it is not like it has reinvented itself. You may talk about the Wind Waker, the DS games, the Twilight Princess, but the mechanic is the pretty much the same. Compared to other franchises that reinvented themselves in the last generation (Metroid Prime Series, F-Zero on the GCN was a great speed focus game insted of the hability focus of the N64, Soul Reaver´s transformation into Soul Calibur, or the Super Mario 3D(N64, Sunshine, Galaxy) for the New Super Mario Bross), well the list can increase a lot, but what i mean is the lack of innovation it has, as i remember, the Zoras were also frozen in OoT and now they are frozen in Twilight Princess, please, at least boil them the next time so Zelda and Link could eat fresh fishes !  XD XD XD

Kidding !

I would like to hear about a Zelda in other game-play situation, it would be too risky to have a First Person Adventure as the Metroid Prime, but they launched a Zelda Crossbow training at the beginning of the Wii generation and it was not that bad received.

I know it is hard to accomplish the high goals that a game such a Zelda generates in each itineration, but just changing the mastermind behind the game could bring new ideas to the franchise without altering the style of game.

What about new species to fight with, to fight for or to fight against ?

What about more sidequest like those found in the RPG games ?

Dont you think they could experiment with the loved-hated Pokemon style in the handhelds and bring them to the bigger systems ?

Mmm, anyways, it is not like i wont be buying any other Zelda series, i just think they might have a chance as long as they reinvent themselves, i mean, real reinvention, not the same Gerudos problems, Zora´s problems, and so on . . .

Majora's Mask was an innovation, and Phantom Hourglass as well. (they changed up the gameplay feel quite a bit) Zelda Wii is going to have Motion+, so its almost definitely going to at least have similar innovation Phantom Hourglass had - and Aonuma already stated they're changing it up. Its just a shame we have to wait so long to figure out what it is >_<

I don't think Metroid has changed that much ever since it went FPS. All 3 games weren't all that different, but yeah, it does better than Zelda has so far when it comes to innovation.. So lets place our bets on Zelda Wii and Metroid: Other M

Psh Zelda is boring compared to the all might SUPER MARIO!!

Metroid > Zelda > Mario

Zelda is entertaining and a like it, but the path the series has taken in the second half of the decade (Twilight Princess is just FAIL, and Phantom Hourglass had really to be longer. I'll buy Spirit Tracks next month, so I can't talk about it yet) makes me think why I should be a religious fan of the series. My first Zelda was Wind Waker, and is considered the best for me today (Ocarina of Time seems so primitive that I actually disliked the game overall, while Majora's Mask was an innovative masterpiece), as no game seemed to follow its basis, I'm not sure what to expect from the next Zelda.

Besides, something that has made me quite disappointed with the franchise is how the use of the Wii Remote on Twilight Princess and in the artwork of the next one screwed with my vision of the series. I am proud to be left-handed, just as Link in almost every game (even though he was originally right-handed), but seeing that, to just "fit" the game better, the development team turned him right-handed. This makes me furious and seems that they don't care a thing about consistency in the franchise.

Overall, I see the Zelda franchise as a good one, but not excellent. It hasn't innovated for a long time and its success, as we can see here, is due only to a few faithful followers of the series, concentrated on a small group (take a look at the total sales today, they don't pass the 60 million, behind franchises like Madden NFL and TETRIS -_-), and hardly gets newcomers among the newest games. YET, it's a good franchise, but it's far from being an universally acclaimed one, I mean, recognized not only by Nintendo fans, but by Nintendo "haters" as well (for instance, God of War is also inserted in this category).
