There isn't an official GotY...

Oh. Then why are we always having this discussion lol. It's all a waste of time if there is no "main GOTY" because obviously IGN, Gametrailers, Edge, Spike, Gamespot, Eurogamer etc are all gonna give it to different games.

I thought the Spike TV GOTY was the "official" one which everyone refered to when talking about GOTY, and I had the impression it was awarded by a select group of industry and media representatives. So did I just make that up in my own head lol?

The Spike TV GoTY awards aren't close to official. The ceremony is only watched by frat boys and people who want to see the trailers.

The two awards that could be considered Official:

1) http://www.interactive.org/

Because it has the word "Academy" in its name

and

2) http://www.gamecriticsawards.com/

Because it puts together the opinion of every major game critic and finds the most common GoTY.

It includes IGN, PTOM, OXM, G4, GT, GameSpot (GoTY awards being the one thing which GameSpot doesn't fail at), and many more.

We should get VGC on there

The one on Spike is actually the worst. Its online voting so its basically the collective opinion of fanboys.

Honestly I must confess that I'm a little ignorant towards the Wii, so I don't know much about SMG2's review potential. Depends on what the original game got on Meta? I dont remember lol.

Super mario galaxy 1 got 97% on meta.

Wow! Then SMG2 for sure is a contender.

If galaxy 2 is just a tad better than galaxy 1 and the majoirty of people think too, Mario galaxy 2 might just get 98% but there's bound to be lousy reviewer giving it a low score like 5/10, I wouldn't be suprised if Onion gave them such a low score.

Hmm... it will get great reviews, but lets say even with a 97% Meta or so, do you really think the GOTY-board with it's anti-Wii biased comittee will give it to Mario Galaxy 2?

the anti-wii biased comittee doesn't help I know but that's how they are :(.  But I do know it will likely be Nintendo GOTY though.

No it's not, but then I'm not saying it deserves the award, I'm just saying which I think will get it. BIG difference.

Well, we dont know much about Fable III yet and maybe a miracle happens and Molyneuz fulfills all his promises for once lol.

Anyway, lets pick God of War 3, SplinterCell, Bioshock 2 and ME 2. While Im confident they're gonna get 93-95% on Meta, they won't get GOTY simply because they're too niched, won't get enough sales and are released too early in the year.

Heavy Rain - a 1 million selling interactive movie xclusive on PS3 getting GOTY? No.

You do realize that Fahrenheit (which Heavy Rain is a spiritual successor to) got a metascore of 83, and Heavy Rain looks to fix the complaints of the first game, right?

Heavy Rain will be a contender for the title like many other games this year, trust me.

Trust me, it won't.

Not to bash Heavy Rain, because it's an original one-of-a-kind -game in these days, but there's so many factors that will hinder it from becoming GOTY. The most important being that it won't get 90% on Meta, having gameplay that is far too limited with it's QTE's and interactive cut-scenes. Other factors are comparatively low sales, niche genre and having an early year release.

Oh it will. Not on Spike, but I can understand your sentiment if you thought there was one "official" GoTY award. Every time we have this discussion, it's mostly about which game will win the most GoTY awards, and any game capable of winning just one of those awards are a real contender. That's my experience at least

Ahh now I get you.  But I think super mario galaxy 2 will probably not be winning any awards exept in the wii game of the year.  If it's a tad better than the original then I think it has a good chance at it.
