Forums - Gaming Discussion - FFXIII is 32.6GB of movies and just 6.8GB of actual game content

9 hours of multi track audio(5.1 DTS + DD + PCM, 7.1 DTS + DD + PCM, etc... which take a lot of space already,) and video, means heavy ass compression using the H.264 codec on the video part, which would most likely be in 720p instead of 1080p. I don't think a lot of you actually understand the size differences and the amount of compression/options is required to do really high quality HD video encodes. =P The upside is, the quality of these cut scenes on a larger display will be a ton better than the WMV shit that the 360 will have, the down side is, nothing, but the 360 will still have that cross game voice chat option amirite? -_^b

Just in case someone still doubts it, here is the easy calculation to show why:

1920 pixels * 1080 pixels * 3 bytes per pixel (red, green blue) * 24 frames per second = 149 299 200 bytes = 145 800 KB = 142 MB per second.

Where are the hard drives, or optical drives that can read that fast? And where is the storage medium to store 500 GB per hour of movies?

Some SSD are that fast. But they are usually small, like 250 GB max and are pretty expensive. Good for OS and programs, but for movies...

You are right, nearly nobody use uncompresed video nowadays.

Well now we can put to rest the stupid notion that the ps3 version was gimped because of the xbox360.

What does that have to do with anything?

The cutscenes are 1080P UN COMPRESSED, on the ps3.

BS. Uncompressed video is not possible on today's consoles or PCs (unless you have an ultra-fast hard drive).

Uncompressed audio, yes. Video, no.

you see this is the kind of nonsense that gets thrown around all the time, I'm glad you were able to clear that up for us NJ5.

Oh sorry, I was just quoting square enix since they themselves said the cutscenes were going to be uncompressed native 1080p resolution on the PS3.

I don't know what they meant about uncompressed video, but they did say uncompressed. Also, the fact still remains a large portion of the game was cut out, and there are rumors going around that microsoft wasn't happy about using more than 3 discs for FF XIII.

rumours... oh really... well thats the get out of jail free card every time isnt it.

they didnt want 4 discs..... even though the Microsoft published Lost Od used 4 discs?  come on.

lol.....there has to be a new excuse when it comes to the 360 dumbing down the game now right?

Hmmm, so the volume of the cut content would have been, what, half a gig at most? Guess all the stupid "FF XIII was gimped cause of 360 version!!" idiots can shut up.

Actually on a dual layered dvd they can use about 6.8 gb of space. The rest is used for various types of copyprotection stuff enforced by microsoft.

This means that the 3 disced 360 version will only be able to be around 19-20 gigabyte. And even if they could use it all, it would still only amount to 27 gigabytes. Ofcourse your point is that no gameplay content has been cut because of this.

What you have to take into concideration are two things.

1. Compression. If they compress the video too much, it'll look noticably worse. They don't want this to happen.

2. Gameplay content overlaps. In other words. Each dvd has to have a bunch of things that are the same across the three. For instance, your char models, textures and sounds.

Ofcourse the second one is much more expansive than I explained but you should get the idea.

That's not to say the game would have been any different had it been exclusive. Frankly, noone knows if it would.

Check out my game about moles ^

The more the better, looks like there will be alot to be told

But "32.6" for uncompressed full HD video files isn't really that big

Can't wait for the US release...

Its not my word, its the word on the net..

Why would square cut a games worth of content? There WILL BE NO DLC, they already confirmed it.

Its just plain stupid to do that if you can use more space for the content to fit.

So what? Those movies are in high definition which means they will be occupying a lot of disk space.

What it DOESN'T mean is that the game sucks, or by the same account, that it is brilliant, for only using up 6.8 GB. That's a very limited thought process.

Past Final Fantasies of the PS 1 and 2 era also used a lot of disk space for their movies and nobody complained, quite the conrtary.

It's about high fucking time people stop pissing all over Final Fantasy just because the JRPG era is over and all they want now is shooter-o-rama.

How many space does the cutscenes in any HD WRPG occupy in the game as well? I think that people are just doing this to get a rise over JRPGs, exactly for what you just said.

Most cutscenes in WRPGs are done in-engine so I don't think they can be measured.

IIRC, most of disc space in WRPGs goes to voice acting.

Never the less they are cutscens right? You don't control anything in cutscenes. Dragon Age: Origins had tons of cutscenes, Mass Effect did too. It may be in-engine, yet the fact remains that they take up viable game time, just as any FMV in JRPG gamimg.

Most cutscenes in WRPGs are dialougue scenes that the player can control though.

You know forget it. I don't want this to be a JRPG/WRPG flamewar. I'll judge the cutscenes in FFXIII on their own merits.

There are 9 hours of cut scenes (confirmed by S-E) in this 40 - 60 hour game (main quest wise)

& 100 + hours game if you do all the side quests

but still whine away if you want guys, its only making you look bad

Just mind blowing 60 hrs...now that's a game!  Not this bs 6-8hrs...
