The best selling PC game ever in japan was Ys VI, which sold ~500k.  Or half what MH3 on Wii sold.

btw, since Ys VII sold only 100k, I guess it's an even bigger flop.


this is much different the PSO and FF11. 1st you CANNOT play those games offline so you needed a online service to play them... which is NOT the case with monster hunter. you can play the game offline just you need to play to play online if im not mistaken. So everyone can buy it which kills your arguement.

2nd  if you want to talk about flops on consoles didnt ff13 on half the userbase in japan sell better then any Wii 3rd party game? Using your Ys logic that would mean every 3rd party game was a fail and thats clearly not the case as lots of games sold well... (just not halo, COD well)

PS2 games came before the series popularity exploded with portable games. Not fair comparison. Still pretty good sales. Over one million in japan on home console is always great achievement.

funny how depending on how people want to see it flop or not they allow comparisons.  if you want gta china for ds to be a flop compare it to ps2 gta's.  if you want it to be a success then just look at sales.  if you want monster hunter to be a sucess, look at sales, or at previous console versions sales.  if you want it to be a flop, look at handhelds sales.

I didn't say that it is a flop. I just pointed out that comparing it to previous PS2 versions is not fair. And yes it is true that it is not fair either to compare 2D GTA to 3D GTA. I just wonder why they bothered with chinatown in the first place when they just could have released new 3D stories game to PSP ( and maybe port it later to the Wii) and sell at least 3milj.

its a better comparison to compare it to the console version.  both are on consoles and both are pay for online play.  the handheld version isn't on a console (huh no brainer) and is also a free to play online game.  Totally different, its like comparing ff11's sales to other final fantasies.

I don't think it has with affordability to do as much as Nintendo's pure skill in marketing. It's easy to point to their own franchises (Pokémon, Mario) and see how well-advertised they were with numbers to back it up.

But for a more recent example, take a look at the Professor Layton-series. Sold well in Japan to be sure, but once Level-5 gave Nintendo the rights to market it outside of Japan it became a massive phenomenon. Everyone realizes just how incredibly well Nintendo can market things. Of course, Capcom and Square, seeing this, leaped at the opportunity to get their Japan-centric franchises advertised by Nintendo. Monster Hunter has been around for about 5 years and sold horribly outside of Japan, and Dragon Quest has been around for over 20 years (!) and while it's always been a gigantic success in Japan, it's never posted impressive numbers anywhere else. But with Nintendo's help, it just might. It's not about the money, it's about the talent.

They simply see that, even if they get a smaller slice of the profits now, there will likely be so much more profit to get a slice off that it will give them a lot more money than advertising it themselves would.

Thanks for that perspective and example. I thought that Level-5 was owned by Nintendo outright. I did not realize that they did exactly what Capcom is going to be doing. Makes more sense now.

I think the last third party million seller on a Nintendo console in Japan was Dragon Quest III remake for SFC in 1996.

Uh, have you ever played PSO/PSU?  You know MoHun's basically a PSO clone (ie: Diablo clone) right?  And that you can play PSO/PSU offline for free (PSO1&2 even multiplayer offline)?

And my "Ys logic" was comparing sequential same series releases.  FFXIII compared to other mainline entires... well... maybe it could've matched the PS2 entires had it been a Wii game. ;)

You mean GB and DS.  GBA didn't have any 3rd party million sellers in Japan.  MegaMan Battle Network 4 almost managed it though.
