Forums - Gaming Discussion - Rainbird, Wii owner. Wanna lend me some knowledge?

It's true, I'm getting a Wii.
When all is said and done, I will own a white Wii with two M+upgraded controllers, Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort, later this month.

Now, what I'm looking for is suggestions for games, both retail and WiiWare (I'm not into old-school games, so don't bother with VC). What I'm looking for is good games in general, but I'd like to see unique and innovative games the most. Games that feel like they make the move to motion controls worth it.

But they also need good controls, as bad controls is the one thing I really don't like in games. MGS2 and 3 aren't bad games, but the controls pretty much ruined the experience for me :-S

I've also never really been a Nintendo gamer. We had a N64 back in the day, but I only played some SM64 which was pretty fun, so suggest away on the Nintendo front.

Finally, I'd also like suggestions for GameCube games I might have missed. I don't give a rat's ass about Mario Sunshine and stuff like that which has newer iterations on the Wii, but I'm on the lookout for stuff like Eternal Darkness. I haven't been a serious gamer for long, so don't think there are classics out there that I have surely played, because I most likely haven't.

These are the games you don't have to mention:

  • Okami
  • MadWorld
  • Endless Ocean: Blue World
  • Monster Hunter Tri
  • Resident Evil 4
  • SMG
  • Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
  • Red Steel 2
  • No More Heroes
  • Eternal Darkness
  • Metroid Prime Trilogy

Aaaaaaand go!

EDIT:

By the way, I'd also like suggestions for great local multiplayer games (online doesn't really matter though, but feel free to suggest some anyway)
I know about the likes of Mario Kart, SSBB and NSMBWii though

Good man.

GAMECUBE
Legend of Zelda: Windwaker !!!!! (you say no nintendo, yet Okami is basically a Zelda game in disguise with a few new ideas)
Resident Evil (aka REmake)
F-Zero GX
Star Wars Rougue Squadron II (or III)
TimeSplitters 2
Wave Race Blue Storm

WII
Battalion Wars II
F1 2009 (if an F1 fan)
SSX Blur
Zack & Wiki
Tiger Woods 10
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

(also I haven't played extensively, but Wii Sports Resort... you could get this and Tiger 10 to get 2 motion + (or wait for Red Steel 2 for one of them)

WIIWARE
Dr.Mario
Lost Winds (probably both of them, but I haven't got the 2nd yet)
Swords & Soldiers
World of Goo
Toki Tori

------

I can't reccomend anything else as i haven't played it myself, I will add that Deadly Creatures and Geometry Wars Galaxies are both very good, but find them budget price for sure.... well worth it for £10-20 (or $15-25 is probably US equivalent)

Both of the Fire Emblems and Battalion Wars 2.

Punch out! and you really ought to try Bully with the Wii controls if you can find it. The Motion control is implemented extremely well on Bully. If you are into cricket, try Ashes 2009. Also you should try Excite truck if you can find it. Fast-paced, arcadey and a lot of fun.

In my opinion the N64 was not just the best console of the 5th gen but, to this day the best console ever created!

Also, manhunt 2 and Little kings story of course.

peachbuggy just reminded me about punch-out!! and it is one of my favorite games. Definitely a must buy if you like a nice puzzle/twitch game. Yes, it is boxing, but it is more about finding opponents weaknesses and patterns and quickly responding (or anticipating if you aren't too far in the game).

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Most of the previous recommendations you got, plus:

IF you get a Wii Balance board (by buying Wii Fit Plus...), Shaun White Snowboarding is great fun, you feel the wind going through your hair... (or maybe the new version though I haven't played it yet, supposed to be a slight improvment, its biggest fault being apparently that it hasn't improved enough on the previous game)

Link's Crossbow Training - for $30 or less you get a zapper (which can be used in some games like the Call of Duty games on the Wii) + a neat crossbow game (set in world in the style of Twilight Princess)

Rabbids Go Home (if you enjoy non stop crazy humor)

Almost forgot - Deadly Creatures (if you can find it - you alernately play as a tarantula or a scorpion, brrr.... the main criticism about the game was its length, but at bargain price it's definitely worth it)

Thanks for the reminder on Deadly Creatures, I had forgotten about that one. I'm also on the lookout for Rabbids Go Home, but I think I'll try to get it for cheap as well

Also, coming up:
Sky Crawlers : Innocent Aces (flight game, Wiimote can be used as throttle, second player can control an additional aiming reticule on screen in the dog fights)
Fragile Dreams (beautiful atmospheric game with apparently very good implementation of the Wiimote as a flashlight, Wiimote also used as a proximity sensor to track invisible ghosts)

And I forgot about Fragile as well, I still need to look into it once it hits Europe! I'm not into flight games though.

Thanks for the input

Get Skies of Arcadia! The developers for skies are the ones who made Valkyrie Chronicles...

Well, that gives them a bit of credit, but what is the game about?

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn

Great strategy game, extremely challenging and enjoyable, awesome characters and story.

I'll add another point to Fire Emblem

Cursed Mountain - Incredible sound and atmosphere and a unique motion-based combat system where you pray your enemies to death. Slow paced though, so if you need excitement, you'll need to look elsewhere.

How are the controls? I seem to remember hearing them not being too good.

Trauma Center: New Blood - Fast-paced and precise pointer action. This version of the game has the local multiplayer you crave. May want to wait for Trauma Team, though.

I don't know much about the series, but what exactly do you do? Perform surgery? Play as a part in a japanese version of Scrubs?

Tiger Woods 10 - I never thought I would buy a golf game, but man am I ever glad that I did. I didn't care much for sports games at all until the Wii came around, but the visceral satisfaction of playing with WM+ has me eager to try almost any sports game that supports it, and this is an excellent implementation. Doesn't have Grand Slam's wicked learning curve. Local and online multiplayer, once again.

As for Gamecube games, the two I've enjoyed most have been Fire Emblem and Paper Mario: TTYD. Two absolutely great RPGs.

Some followup.

The controls in Cursed Mountain are fine, but like so many motion controlled games, there's a bit of a trick to them. It's a challenge sometimes to figure out exactly what kind of gesture the game developers want you to make, which contradicts the common assertion that motion controls are more intuitive than conventional gamepads. For the prayers in Cursed Mountain, you need to hold the wiimote and nunchuk up in front of you so that the buttons are facing you rather than the ceiling, then either thrust the control at the TV or sweep it in front of you as directed. Once you've got the gesture down, you should be able to perform it 90% reliably, and the game gives enough slack that you can try a gesture twice if you have to. I found it very satisfying once I got the knack of it.

Trauma Center has a story, but the game itself is mostly about the surgery. It demands that the pointer be operated with precision and speed, that the right tool be selected for the job, and careful management of the patient's vitals. Get high scores by being fast, not making any mistakes, and keeping the patient's vitals high.

Hmm, I don't know how interesting that is. Trauma Center doesn't really sound like my thing, though I could be wrong. I'll look more into Cursed Mountain though

Actually, I said 'suggest away' on the Nintendo front. Back when I didn't have a Wii, I didn't really care, but now that I have one, I need to see what all the fuss is about

I'll look into the GC titles, but I'm not sure if any of it appeals enough to me

And what's Battalion Wars?

And have you played SSX Tricky? If so, how does Blur stack up to it?

And what is Dr. Mario? I remember a Tetris like game Mario-game with pills instead of bricks on the GameBoy, is this just a new iteration of that?

Thanks for the suggestions

Battalion Wars 2 is the best and really only TPS on Wii but its also one part strategy game in the same series Advance Wars, same style, same devs, etc, just different story and gameplay.

Honestly Battalion Wars 2 is overlooked a lot as well, it has really solid online, and pretty fun overall. It should rank up there on your list if you like strategic shooters.

^^ Agreed sometimes the controls take a bit to really grasp. I have this issue in Silent Hill, when I have to throw monsters off me. Just a bit of a learning curve. Of course, game review authors are generally too impatient for learning curves, and just write it off as "bad controls"
