Yes. For a few reasons, which in a way... Are linked.
1. Better multiplayer.
2. Level creation.
3. Play/Create/Share.
4. Level variety.
Gameplay, i would say NSMB has the slight edge. But overall quality of the game itself... I would give that to LBP rather easily.

There Carl, I helped you out with the greatest 2D Platformer ever. 
They don't need anything to kill Mario, just compete with it, I'm not a Nintendo fan anymore, but even I like Mario. So no need to kill him, just make good games to compete with it. Little Big Planet is a good one, Ratchett and Clank is another, Jack and Daxter is another. Sonic is about Done.

For a reason. You can create your own level and play it without online. You need online for the play/create/share thing.
That's why i said they were linked. The level creation is a big part of LBP, for that reason alone... I would rank it above NSMBW.
@Smeags, agreed 
Mario has been around too long and been consistantly quality the entire time (with a couple exceptions). Once multiple generations love a character it's nearly impossible to 'kill'.
Another character would have to begin notably and withstand the test of time and might eventually overtake Mario (like Spider-man eventually overtook Superman) but that'd be 20 years in coming at this point.

Ok, I guess NSMB is the better platformer as a level creator, multiplayer, and play/create/share are not prerequisites for being a platformer.
Level Variety may help its case but NSMBWii and NSMB has plenty of that too.
In short, be more descriptive.
