Mario has been around too long and been consistantly quality the entire time (with a couple exceptions). Once multiple generations love a character it's nearly impossible to 'kill'.
Another character would have to begin notably and withstand the test of time and might eventually overtake Mario (like Spider-man eventually overtook Superman) but that'd be 20 years in coming at this point.
