You can't make a third party studio into a first party studio. The studio will keep making games that play and feel like they are third party. Especially if it keeps making the IP that it used to make.

Microsoft needs internal teams that can make games that people will instantly be able to recognize as an "Xbox game"

Huh? I don't get it. If Microsoft buys Epic then they get the Gears IP and a studio that is used to making exclusives

Games that really represent a console, and exclusive games are not the same thing.

So what you are saying is that Gears doesn't represent the console? Gears 2 was made specifically with the 360 in mind

I am unsure about Gears. I know that Halo is currently THE series that represents the Xboxes. It is very hard for console companies to get game series that feels unthinkable on other systems, MS was lucky they bought Bungie before they released Halo on Mac, or Halo would never have rocketed the Xbox.

Does Gears of War feel unthinkable on other systems the way Sonic felt unthinkable on non-Sega systems before Dreamcast died? I know there is a PC version of Gears 1.

What I'm saying is that MS needs games that will instantly feel like Xbox games, and it's better if MS creates their own studios to make these games rather than to buy third party studios that make games that feel like you can have the same experience elsewhere.

Gears of War exclusively on a Microsoft system.

Where's your problem ?

PC is not a Microsoft system. Sure, Windows is a Microsoft platform, but how does Gears getting a PC version help it represent the Xbox360? It sure isn't helping the Xbox brand that MS is trying to build for consoles, and even if it was exclusive, you're missing my main point.

And Halo on Mac helped it? You aren't making much sense

It was a mistake for MS to let Epic go. Now they don't own Gears of War. Not smooth MS. MS should also be punched in the gut for letting Bioware own the Mass Effect rights (though Bioware is promising that they won't release the series on PS3 so if they aren't BSing, then it's not really a loss for Microsoft. Whether you play Mass Effect on 360 or Microsoft Windows, Microsoft is making money somewhere. Yeah MS doesn't get royalties for the PC release but since the game is Windows exclusive, you have to buy a Microsoft OS to play it. That's money in Microsoft's pocket. Microsoft indirectly benefits from PC gaming because a lot of PC games out there won't work with Linux or Mac)

As for Mistwalker, it may be worth it if the price is right. If not, MS owns Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon anyway so unless we never see a Lost Odyssey 2 or Blue Dragon 2, Mistwalker will continue to work with Microsoft and release 360 exclusives for them. It would help if Microsoft collaborated with Mistwalker again to create another MS-owned IP for Japanese audiences (and western gamers who want more Mistwalker-developed games). Why stop at just Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon? Mistwalker is valuable studio to do business with.

Microsoft also has a good working relationship with Itagaki (whose off doing his own thing right now), who is very Pro-Xbox, and the From Software guys are tight with Microsoft too (despite their previous working relationship with Sony with the development of Demon's Souls. They've developed multiple titles for Microsoft Game Studios). They also worked with Tri-Ace once (Infinite Undiscovery) and since Tri-Ace is independent, I wouldn't mind seeing Microsoft work with them again. Feelplus also worked with Microsoft (helped Mistwalker with Lost Odyssey).

There are plenty of options for Microsoft (Mistwalker, Tri-Ace, Feelplus, Itagaki and From Software as well as other indie developers they could consider like Level 5 and what not) but MS doesn't seem interested in Japan at the moment, which is a shame.

What do you mean "It was a mistake for MS to let Epic go"? As far as I ever know MS never owned Epic

Oops my bad. Bungie is the company they used to own. Not Epic. Alright I'll just say it was a mistake for Microsoft to not have Epic sign over the rights to Gears of War (not to say that Epic would jump ship but you never know).

Halo was never released on Mac. Had it been released on Mac, it would not have been a game series associated with the Xboxes like today.

Actually there was an interesting article in OXM about Bungie leaving Microsoft. The top guys had already decided that if Microsoft said no then they would leave anyways. At least the way Microsoft did it they kept the devs happy, and making Halo games

@Kungras

It was released 12/3/03 on the Mac ported by Westlake Interactive, and published by Macsoft

They surely ported a lot of Microsoft titles.

I always see PC/360 exclusive as a "Microsoft" exclusive considering most PC's run on Windows. Wikipedia claims less then 1% of computer users have Linux and Apple is at about 5%. People can argue that Gears of War is not a 360 exclusive (well the second one is till they put out the PC version) but It's still a Microsoft exclusive and your gonna have to buy their OS most likely to get it.

It's just that simple.

Oh. In that case I stand corrected.

My main point about MS needing to found new studios and make their own games to better represent their system still stands though.
