The Slim released, a $100 price reduction, Tales of Vesperia, and Final Fantasy opened. Those are the major reasons the PS3 came somewhat close to the Wii.

No, PS3 also had a much stronger 1st half.  Yakuza 3, RE5, SF4 and the FFXIII demo (plus lots of bundles).  Wii's only "big" release meanwhile was an old PS2 port (MHG) and it's big 2008 releases failed to make evergreen status (Animal Crossing, Wii Music).

if MH3 have sold better everything would have turned out different Wii had munster hunter 3 this year which had great success on psp it can be compared to final fantasy and dragon quest but still no ones recongise monster hunter 3 a MEGA release that flopped

PS3 and Wii being so close just goes to show how easily things can change.

Great numbers for most!

I was going to say the same for PSP and Wii. :P

No where near a bigger difference than what has happened with PS3 and Wii. 2007 numbers following...

Wii - 3,677,579
PSP - 3,061,395
PS3 - 1,218,612

2008...

PSP - 3,639,073
Wii - 2,888,251
PS3 - 1,000,838

2009...

PSP - 2,282,912
Wii - 1,987,526
PS3 - 1,795,568

I think 2010 could see PS3 > Wii in Japan.

PS3 best year vs. Wii worst year = Wii > PS3 by a sizeable margin.

This is why I don't share your prediction. I think PS3 peaked this year.

Isn't it alarming that the Wii had its worst year though, despite the biggest console game this gen (NSMB Wii). Monster Hunter 3, Black Wii, Pricecut, Tales of Graces, Wii Sports Resort/ Wii Fit Plus? I think the downward trend of Wii will continue, although it wont be too much lower. Of course though, if DQX releases... Plenty of crow coming my way.

Then though, what does Wii have confirmed in 2010?... I can name a whole bunch of moderately big games on PS3 in Q1/Q2 alone. Would like to know the Wii lineup if someone can help?

You're kind of eschewing the facts there.

NSMBW came out to incredible sustained sales and has given the Wii both its best selling ever, and the best selling week ever of any home console. The Wii is also up YoY in the month of December. Considering the sheer magnitude of 2008's sales for the Wii, I think this is a highly significant indicator that the Wii is doing strong (especially considering that pundits predicted this would be the worst Christmas for the Wii).

I'll leave list wars for other people to take up.

I don't even know what eschewing means. But i think you mean skewing... In which case, im not. Im just showing facts you dont want to see, it seems.

It's not list wars, i just want to know the Wii lineup

es⋅chew

–verb (used with object) to abstain or keep away from; shun; avoid: to eschew evil.

Which is ironic, consider how you rudely claim that there are 'facts that I do not want to see.'

You didn't address my points, instead you tried to patronise me. You are creating arguments based on what you want to see happen.

Then point out which facts i was shunning? Or avoiding?

Not being rude, and i appologise if it seemed that way... I thought you just didn't spell Skewing right

Which points exactly didn't i address? he one that Wii is having massive sales, just like 2008? If so i did address it just in a seperate post where i said it could also be down like Q1/Q2 2009.

Carl, I think Wii and PS3 will be fairly close next year, but I expect Wii to come out on top again. You're forgetting NSMB Wii has only just launched-and it's massive. It could sustain Wii sales for months to come, alongside Sports Resort and Wii Fit Plus, which have both shifted considerable numbers over the holiday period in Japan. As others have pointed out, Wii had a very poor first 6 months this year in Japan. Wii Sports Resort didn't give an immediate hardware boost, and Monster Hunter 3 didn't give a long term boost.

NSMB Wii is going to sustain momentum for a few months at least, I think. As for the 2010 lineups of PS3 and Wii in Japan, I don't know which is better. I don't care much for list wars :P But I do think going into 2010, Wii has the momentum. How long that will last is another matter.

It outsold every other console MH game AFAIK. And 980k isn't a flop.

I don't really think WSR and WF+ are pushing the HW that much, i think the only siginificant boost is coming from NSMB. With the PS3's pretty big lineup in Q1/Q2, will NSMB be enough to get people choosing Wii over PS3? Sure, it has SMG2 in the early months... But as i said in the other thread, will it move significant hardware?

Someone, please... Wii lineup. It would make this conversation a lot easier

I think Galaxy 2 will drive about as much hardware as Yazkua 4 or Versus.

The real problem here is Nintendo's new ideology of holding back announcements until just before release (which is very much in contrast to Sony's or Microsoft's methodology).  We probably won't know the full Q1 lineup until Jan's retailer conference for example, and we currently have no clue for the rest of the year (maybe Galaxy 2 for Golden Week, Zelda for the holiday... and uh, not much else?).  Wii's fortunes could shift pretty fast if we're suddenly looking at MH3G, DQVII and Inazuma Break all within the year (all potential million sellers), which is honestly pretty likely considering everything we know now (DQ franchise migration/history, MH3 western release in Q2 & rumors, Inazuma rumors).  Then you also have Nintendo's lineup, though I'll admit 2010 isn't near as strong there as 2009, though this is somewhat mitigated by 2009's 2nd half evergreens versus the tepidness of 2008's 2nd half failed evergreens.

Like I said before though, barring a surprise DQX holiday launch, NSMBWii will probably be 2010's best seller on consoles and drive significant hardware.  Hell, it even has a shot at outselling Yakuza 4, GT5 and Versus combined.

No doubt they will be close... Possibly closer than this year.

What i think is though... NSMB wont be enough to sustain Wii sales for so long, while PS3 has a bunch of reasonably big games releasing Q1/Q2 that have already been announced.

I need Soriku in here. He will know what Wii has.

EDIT: Yey!

I don't like this ganging up on Carl but one the thing the Wii defenders have right (imo) is that Wii is carrying some good momentum into 2010 (mainly due to NSMBW but also Wii Fit + and WSR) which could (and I would even say "will") lead to stronger HW sals in Q1.

Now where Carl has a very good point is that the Q1 (and even Q2) line up for the Wii is not looking good at all...

So it will be, as usual with the Wii, how far can the evergreens carry out and how long (Nintendo must have something up their sleeve for Q3 and Q4 i hope).

I have strong faith in Mario but he will need help one day (though he needed no help to dominate December 09 like I have never seen anyone dominate!).

Elaine: I will never understand people

Jerry: They're the worst.

MH3 dramatically outsold the PS2 versions and it's a "flop".  So what does that make FFXIII? ;)

Note that not every game is gonna push HW, but this is the lineup so far.

-Dynamic Slash
-No More Heroes: DS
-RE: Darkside Chronicles
-Tatsunoko vs. Capcom (they're releasing the Western version in Japan IIRC since it has extras)
-SMG2
-Monado (probably)
-Trauma Team

Possible/Probable:

-Zelda Wii
-Inazuma Eleven Break (IE2 on DS is on its way to 1 mil+)
-MH3G
-DQ remake/spinoff. I think DQ X will be in 2011.
-Tales of Graces: Director's Cut?

Thanks!
