Forums - Nintendo - Wii's EXCLUSIVE RPG

Alright, it seems like most people have only played FFXII by this guy, which I have no opinion on, having played 20 minutes of it, BUT he's really one of the all-time great and fucking hardcore RPG developers out there. I suspect that if XII was simple and easy, there was top-down control from S-E involved. Take a look at Ogre Battle, Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story, and tell me that there's a more hardcore set of RPG-type games this side of Shin Megami Tensei. All of them are remarkably deep, fleshed out, and combine some of the best elements of jRPGs and western RPGs.

What does everybody hate about FF 12 so much? I'd rather have FF X-2 and a PS2 than any next gen games out right now.

Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.

Updated Wii RPG list:

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: TCB
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: tYPatPL
Tales of Symphonia: KoR
Baten Kaitos 3
Monster Hunter 3
Project O/King's Story (among other genres)
Oboro Muramasa Youtouden (basically Odin Sphere sequel)
Camelot's RPG Project (Presumed Golden Sun 3)
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Opoona
Sword of Legendia
Mysterious Dungeon Furaai no Shiren 3 (if it hits America)
Monster Lab (WRPG)
Super Paper Mario (Eh... sorta RPG)
Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon
Monolith RPG (rumor from this topic)

I discount FFs typically.  Crystal Chronicles needs to prove its worth which it failed to do in the GC era.

Monster Hunter 3 isn't a big name over here.  King's Story looks lame.

Oboro looks more action/platformer than RPG based on the last screen shots I saw.  Fire Emblem is a strategy/RPG, it feels out of place in this list.

Opoona is its own beast definitely.  Sword of Legendia  and Monster Lab have had no press; whether they're quality support or not is debatable at this point.

Mysterious Dungeon looks good, I hope it hits America...

Super Paper Mario moves pretty far from RPG standards; enough so to be considered its own genre.

Only a few of these actually look promising sadly.

@Words of Wisdom

Crystal Chronicles looks significantly less lame than its GC incarnation, simply because I'll actually be able to play it co-op. Stupid GBA-GC link.

I think King's Story looks awesome, and Sword of Legendia is too early to have buzz.

Your definition of what constitutes an RPG seems pretty narrow - I count Action RPGs and Strategy RPGs as RPG-derivatives, so I think they belong on the list.

Regardless, this is already a stronger looking RPG lineup than Nintendo consoles had for the past two generations, I believe. It's not monster by any means, but it's a step up.

The only part which makes no sense about this rumor is that it involves Nintendo regarding Sony as competition, which couldn't be further from the truth.

I don't think it's so much Sony but Final Fantasy XIII they are concerned about. Sony and MS along with certain games like Halo3 and MGS4 are not threats to the Wii but hugely popular Japanese RPG's can be. This is especially so in Japan where Nintendo has a near monopoly to maintain. As for the game it sounds great. Good to see some 3rd party developers are taking the Wii seriously (uggg which means I'll have to add yet another game to my to buy list).

Did you not play CC on the GC? Because it was actually an enjoyable game. The new ones look much better, and each one has some really interesting and unique gameplay ideas. tYPatPL actually looks like it's meant to be a modern day reincarnation of Actraiser with online co-op. Which is nothing short of awesome.

Monster Hunter 3 not being a big name does not make it a bad game. The PS2 games are both solid RPGs. Even if they are insanely difficult. King's Story looks lame? You sir have no soul! Come on, cutesy art doesn't make it a bad game. If that were true no one would have ever played Katamari. It's being made by some incredible developers and the basis of the game is brilliant.

Oboro, like Odin Sphere (don't know if you played this or not) is an Action RPG. I agree it's as much action as RPG, but I'm not just listing turn based games here... Same with Fire Emblem. It's a type of RPG.

I agree we don't know much about Monster Lab and Sword of Legendia yet, but Monster Lab at least has an interestingn premise and the screenshots have an interesting art style. As choirs said it's still too early for these games to have much buzz.

Obviously not all games are good, but considering 3rd party opinions of the Wii it's not looking too shabby. Certainly the best early RPG list on a Nintendo system since the SNES.

Oh I forgot, Skies of Arcadia sequel is being made by Sega and latest rumors say it's on the Wii.

I am outing myself and hereby declare that I enjoyed the crime against humanity. It was my favorite FF game on the PS2 which doesn't mean much because it was the only one I liked. Most dynamic active time battles ever.

Active? Hah! That's a joke. If you were half-decent at setting up your gambits you would never have to pick up the controller in combat to win the whole game (not counting a few bosses). Absolutely awful system.

You lack reading comprehension today. I was talking about FFX-2, not FFXII. See Darc Requiem's post.

Rol, I was ready to delete you from my friend list when I read your second post.

You are right. I think that FF X-2 had the best battle system since FF IX. It was fast, diverse and challenging. Every other aspect of that game was abominable. The characters, cutscenes, plot, minigames.

All that said, I still think FF8 was the worst. That game makes Legend of Legaia look like GOTY.

I may have to delete you from my friends list Rol, anyone that likes FFX-2 is a spawn of the Anti-Christ All jokes aside, yes the battle system was excellent but a battle system does not make an RPG. If that were the case I would have actually been able to finish Grandia Xtreme. Excellent battle system terrible game, while not quite FFX-2 terrible but the point stands.

Don't forget Matsuno has directed 2 perfect scored games by Famitsu. If Nintendo can get the Wii a perfect scored game, Japan will be theirs. Also imagine a non-linear RPG with 1:1 sword controls, that would be very cool.

(That game makes Legend of Legaia look like GOTY. )

Thats messed up considering thats my favorite game of all time with LoZ:Lttp beside it :(
