Predictable stuff: many actually see this as a good thing (hint: fans of a certain underperforming console), the mods are threatening people left and right, and vgchartz gets bashed a few times.
We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai
It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps
We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games. - Activision CEO Bobby Kotick
The fact that they are still going to release quarterly numbers means that they can still be compared to vgchartz's, just on a less regular basis. I think in the end it is a very good thing for this site and only a minor negative for gamers.
No biggie.

Classic - good old neogaf. They do seem to be panicking - gotta love it :)
BTW - read the first 2 pages of comments, not a single anti-VG comment found:
"well there's always vg chartzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz"
...
Haha - and one of the comments even suggested this!
"Perhaps a better idea would be to try and setup a GAF tracking group for sales. We have some smart people here, so I don't think the statistics parsing would be a problem. Obviously the difficulty would be getting sources to do the tracking from.
Something like a more legitimate version of you-know-what."

@shams, thats far more intresting:

Can we blame ourselves for the imminent rise of vg char...? I'm wondering if that banned site has a chance of becoming the place people go for numbers. We see that they are already referenced by various articles and websites. That legitimizes them and, now, with less info, they'll be unchecked. Someone throw up the N'Gai signal cuz he's the only big name that could effectively squash there crap.
It would be funny if vgc becomes big. Why? Well, GAF has this love relationship with sales. That probably attracted ioi. He thought he could actually replicate npd. He was ostracized by gaf, casted out, if you will follow me.
Now, I would argue that our love affair with sales have played a role in all this. We enjoyed leaks for awhile, then someone made a trailer for great lolz. NPD turned the lights out on that party and now, are backing away from an agreement they don't have to adhere to. Our love of numbers and greed pushed away our source and wouldn't it be funny if our love of pure numbers caused the rise of ioi?
I'm kinda interested in how it'll turn out.

It's not a good thing for anyone. Free exchange of information is one of the best things about the Internet, and critical to a robust debate. Anything that cuts back on sales information available to the public is a step in the wrong direction. It's extremely shortsighted to see this only in terms of a gain for vgchartz; whether or not the NPD numbers were more accurate, they were widely accepted as more "official", and thus a useful metric for comparison. I'm extremely disappointed that the group wants to go back to being a secretive black box, accessible only to the privileged few. Historically speaking, that has rarely worked out well for companies, or societies in general.
Too bad there's not another "official" chart-tracking service for America. Look at Japan - the fact that both Famitsu and Media Create track sales means that neither one could ever get away with something like this. Of course, if vgchartz can continue to improve its accuracy, NPD should become less and less relevant as time goes on (which they deserve, if they're going to act like this!)
End of 2008 totals: Wii 42m, 360 24m, PS3 18.5m (made Jan. 4, 2008)
interesting---
"Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo will of course be free to release their own sales info—and presumably leak that of their competitors"
i bet you nin will not hold the numbers back but sony and micro teams will put some heavy spin thats for sure
