Forums - Sony Discussion - Squall is such a B****

"I don't deserve to be anyone, I don't deserve to be loved, I can't protect anyone, I'm worthless.." blah blah blah.. This guy is such a wimpy little girl. What the hell does Rinoa see in him?

I'm playing FF8 again via PSN. What horrible lead character design, now that I realize it.. Back when I first played the game, I was a teenager.. So I guess I kinda shared his emo-ness. But now? Damn man, grow a set of balls will you?

I don't think I remember Squall saying that at all. He is not a self-loathing character, he is an elitist, self-loving arrogant character; his opposite is Laguna who is the opposite of elitist and is much more open. He is very similar to Matt Damon's character in Good Will Hunting. Like Matt Damon's character, Squall goes through a remarkable change throughout the game.

Though I am playing Final Fantasy 7 right now, and that seems similar to something Cloud has said because he was too weak to save his village.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

indeed Squall has never said most of that.  But he has said he shouldn't be relied upon, and the more they try to "rely" on Squall to do things, the more his thought bubbles get funnier.  And Squall isn't an elitist, or self-loving character.  He's just a depressed man who would rather be ordered around than lead. He rather take things as they are without question, I mean, why bother trying to change things, he can't control anything, he's not the one in control.  Until half way through the game when he starts questioning everything and HAS to take control. I guess most people either never finished past half way through the second disc, or just feel Squall's character development is unrealistic.  But Squall goes through a lot; he makes his changes to go from the extreme he's in, to the middle ground and that's one of the things that makes this game so great in my eyes.

Frankly, I don't have the time to write a thesis paper on why Squall is an inelegantly written and clumsily executed character. When a character has a clearly intentionally planned trademark phrase and that phrase is 'whatever', theres not much more that has to be said.

And its been well documented that Squalls 'whatever' doctorine was actually a lazy effort by the translation team to translate a myriad of different phrases (all with completely different words such as 'Hey, but you're a teacher' or 'I don't think that's a good idea').   All different phrases from the Japanese that have no coorilation to the pointless 'whatever' stick Squall has been labeled with in the west (see image below).  And its pretty sad that Squall haters make such a big deal about it since he also says it much less frequently than they make it out to be and mostly only in the first quarter of the game.  Heck, the first two instances of it are more than 5-6 HOURS apart (from the fire cave to the Balamb dance).

So I think you guys should really go back and either a) Replay the game to really see how Squalls character pans out or b) Bring up some solid character points besides the things that are brought up in every thread like this.

Hmm...sure looks like more characters than a simple 'Whatever' to me....

Thats fine, but I speak english, so the version I played had "whatever" Squall.  Its kind of like the anime Naruto, folks rave about it all the time, but I can't stand the main character because of his annoying  "BELIEVE IT!!!" crap that they dubbed in, and it leaves a bad taste in your mouth.  Its kind of unfair to brush the "squall haters" opinions aside just because we never played the "true" version of squall.  I honestly doubt a few changed lines would make me like him any more.

And what I'm trying to say is there was a lot more going on than a 'few changed lines'.  Or do you dispute that there's a major difference between Squall saying 'Whatever' or thinking to himself '...But you're a teacher?'  Or in a later scene, just brushing off Rinoa's advance with yet ANOTHER '...whatever' or actively saying '...I don't think so.'  Aka, the Japanese version of the game showed CHARACTER.  The English version showed a lazy localization staff with a trend of redundancy.

In either case, even with the 'Whatever' script added, those instances of him saying it are few and far between and have only become connected to his character because of an internet meme.  Mostly perpetuated by people who hated the game as a whole and were looking for individual things to mock in the game.  In other words, its a pretty weak thing to focus on since its so easy to argue was caused by mistranslation and only appears in the first quarter of the game.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

Part of the reason why Squall was so annoying was that he sounded like Jon Lovitz......or was I the only one who read his lines like that?

and you sound like bob marley...

...........Yuri Lowell >>>>>> Every FF main protagonist. *Runs away*

will.... ff8 is a little bit like normal ways sooo..... if i would have the burdon of wordl peace at my shoulders i would be emo to

Lightning and Snow. Where do they come from? Clouds yes?

See how awesome Cloud is!

Anyways, Cloud seems more normal to me than Squall. More human like. For example in his childhood days and as a young dude who joined the Shinra army. In Crisis Core you can see how lively he was until that day Zack died etc.  For Squall, well... When he was a young kid he was always the same. Alone lol

Am I right or wrong? C'mon be honest now!
