Great sales.

NSMB sold me on the DS. If I didn't have LBP, I would definitely be getting a Wii + NSMBWii.

What I don't understand is why LBP sales are nowhere near NSMBs sales. Platform marketshare does not account for this. Mario factor?

The simplest explanation is that NSMBWii is the better platformer right out of the box. LBP has a level editor to make up for this, but that is not something for the everyday casual user really. Plus those levels can be epicly good, or epicly bad. Mario levels are universally done by the guys who have defined the genre.

Not to say that LBP is a bad game mind you. I don't really have any first hand experience with it. This is just logical deduction based on the features that are most heavily promoted with each game. Anyone who expected the two to sell equally just didn't understand the market I would guess. Both were an amazing success though.

LBP has some pretty great custom levels but of those I've played (I played quite a few) none of them really compare to, say, 8-1

But that's not a fair comparison since that's one of the best levels ever

That, and the aforementioned floaty physics of LBP.  Up until... well LBP a game would of been murdered by people if it was that floaty.

LBP's strength is not the actual platforming of it.

It's strength is the co-op and level creation.  Which, level creation is usually something that doesn't sell well.

8-1 was really well done. Hell all of world 8 was some of the best platforming I have experienced. 9-7 is still the best level in any platformer ever. I can't think of one that comes close really.

Amen!

I'd say the console image also has a lot to do with it. I don't think people see the PS3 as a party machine, or a local multiplayer machine. It's about the epic singleplayer experiences. Little Big Planet doesn't really fit in with that image.

OT: I hadn't really expected it to sell this much in Japan. It's way above anything I'd ever expected.... INSANE!

Merry christmas everybody!

No WSR in the media create top 10. It should be close to 50000, which is good.

I don't know. Maybe I'm biased, 1.5m for FFXIII is fantastic, but I'm just more impressed by NSMB 568k week 3. NSMB Wii is GiGanTic (Rol shout out)

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

Wait. What's so good bout 9-7?

Everything. The level is designed around impressive tricks, quick thinking, and expertly performed jumps. The level is clearly designed to force a speed run out of anyone who attempts it. The whole level is tailored to everything I enjoy in platformers really.
