Same here, although for me the only thing where MM3 comes really close is the music.

I'd agree with that.  I just mean in the overall vote.

3 was the best of the Sliding Megaman games.  I find myself missing the slide in MM2.  Though 2 is still the most enjoyable.

Overall best is Mega Man 4. I think a large percentage of people never really played 4 around the time it came out, but it's by far my favorite. The music is excellent (omg Wily stage 3/4 music is bloody EPIC), the storyline is the best of the 8-bits (Dr. Cossack is your nemesis this time? Nope, major plot twist! Wily just kidnapped Cossack's daughter!), and I feel that level design peaked with 4 (best water level with Dive Man, Met level, Ring Man's platforms).

Mega Man 4 also had two of my favorite robot masters off-setting the crappy robot masters. Pharaoh Man and Skull Man absolutely pwn.

But seriously, after the major plot twist (I was used to Wily being the boss as a kid until IV), and hearing the final stage's music... I could never pick another MM game. Seriously, just listen to this music, not to mention the explosion sound when it loops!

Currently playing: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, NBA2k11, Metal Gear Solid, Picross 3d

For me in large part the music determines how much I like a Mega Man game. While most of the latter Mega Man games recycle boss and stage themes, I don't mind it in MM9, because it has the best music since MM3. From MM4 onwards the music just kept getting worse and less memorable. Of course MM9 does more things right than just having good music, so it ranks pretty high in my list of favorite MM games. I am not sure if I like it more than MM3, but it's at least my third favorite of the whole bunch.

Generally, music in video games doesn't get the credit it deserves, it's way more important than graphics.

I agree with that.  I'd actually go a step farther in that i miss the NES and SNES style music.  It was unique... now it's usually just generic classical or rock music.

Music is waaaaaaaaay more important than graphics, even in film. If you have a good song playing, people won't mind if you have really horrible editing. That's how people can tolerate MTV and commercials. Good music helps the mood more than bad editing hurts the mood. I think it's because people FEEL audio much more than visuals. Graphics can't make you dance, ya know?

I'm with MM2 all the way in every category. I've always had MM3 as a close 2nd because it has the bosses from MM2 and MM3. And MM9 is also my 3rd favorite now.

I think the hardware limitations forced the composers to work harder in order to achieve good results and in return that led to more memorable music than we have in most of today's games. It's pretty telling when a lot of today's best music are remixes of classic video game music.

Yeah, I've been thinking this is the case. Or maybe all the awesome composers are just getting old...

As for music > graphics, I'd agree, with some exceptions. I imagine you probably don't play too many western games, but music wouldn't be very useful in Counterstrike, when you're listening for footsteps. I'd guess most games that end up having you use voice chat (or have you yelling at each other local multi) don't need much music, you wouldn't hear much anyway. I'd say Wii Sports is the best Japanese example, but... it doesn't exactly stress graphics, either.

On topic, MM2. Yeah.

It's a good point, but i know nothing jazzes me up for a game of TF2 like the opening music for it.

Perhaps music is too narrow a term though, and sound in general makes more sense to compare vs graphics.

Once again, while the visual design of TF2 is amazing... (espiecally the new glowing eyed possesed demoman.)  the stuff the characters say is really what makes the game.  The characters hilarious yet non offensive stereotypes really make the game.

If you want another example... if you own No More Heroes.  Watch the first trailer when it was called Heroes.

Ugh, if it still had those voice actors there is no way i would of bought it.  I don't even think i'd be able to get through a level if someone bought it for me!
