Forums - Sales - Pachter talks GTA: CW low sales, future of Tony Hawk, Call of Duty and more

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter has sat down to discuss a number of industry topics, including Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, Tony Hawk: RIDE and more. Check out brief snippets below, and hit up the link for the full blurbs.

On Chinatown Wars sales - I don't think that Chinatown Wars failed because of poor marketing. I think that an M-rated game will have difficulty selling on the DS, since the majority of DS owners are under 17 and can't buy it.

On Tony Hawk: RIDE sales and series future - It's a little early to kill off the Tony Hawk franchise. First of all, we have only one month of sales data, and although the numbers were weak, I think that consumers were somewhat shocked by the price. ...I think that Activision should consider going back to a controller-based game, since they have made several great ones under the Tony Hawk brand. If they are fixated on creating a peripheral bundle, they have to price more reasonably, and make sure that the game and peripheral work well enough to satisfy the gaming press.

On Call of Duty annual releases - I think that there is real risk in annual franchises, as it is typically hard to keep consumers interested with a new version every year. It is very difficult to keep things "fresh" with annual installments.

Seconded.

Just make a Tony Hawk's Project 8 - 2

i think tony hawk games are dead, activision milked that franchise to death, and it ain't that much fun anymore.

You have to "satisfy the gaming press"? What on Earth are you talking about Pachter? You have to satisfy customers, not the press...

Did anyone mention to him the sales of Chinatown Wars on PSP?

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Are we forgetting the failure that is the PSP version?

And Tony Hawk has been unappealing to me since Underground came out. That was the last one I played. I do want Skate It though....

Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. "  thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

His take on the DS was a failure. Seriously if this is true why the is the PSP selling less? It's simple GTA fans didn't want it. Well most of them anyways.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

What? PSP must be owned by kids, I guess? It couldn't possibly have been the game itself that was the problem...

80K on DS is hardly a flop but I suppose it is by GTA standards. I disagree about the age, there's lots of adults with DS (as Brain Age would attest) but most of them wouldn't consider GTA 'mature' they'd consider CrossworDS mature. Meaning they'd see Crosswords and Brain Age as games for mature adults and GTA a young adult or kids game.

Shame GTA:CW is a great game and deserves better sales.
