Forums - Sony - Sony 's Koller on PS3 Motion Control

Sony thinks it will have what it takes to win the motion control wars. It also seems to be planning to go after a more "casual" audience -- focusing on shooting, sports, and family games.

John Koller, Sony's head of PlayStation marketing, has said that family, shooting and sports games will be central to the success of its upcoming motion controller, and that Project Natal and Wii will struggle to compete with it in those genres.

The exec also revealed that Sony's main focus in 2010 would be on motion control gaming, 3D gaming and the PlayStation Network.

"In terms of the best types of games, I'd say that right now we're looking at a real wide variety of genres that can utilise the technology," Koller told GamePro, when quizzed on the sorts of upcoming PS3 titles that would benefit from motion control.

My take is that at this stage it sounds like PR speak. It is also interesting to me that both MS (Family Games) and Sony seem to be targeting the group that Nintendo has successfully "wooed" for much of this generation. The big questions are whether or not there is a substantial number of less serious gamers who have not bought their systems or whether there is anything that would make them want to switch to another system.

This has been posted before, but anyways, at this point it's all PR speak. Only when we see the software for both the wands and Natal can we decide.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

Koller is just the marketing guy, he doesn't know anything relating to the tech nor the games for it, hes just a guy sent by SCEA to let people know about them.

I agree on the market share issue.

In terms of gameplay I probably figure Sony could be best, then Nintendo then MS (I'm being picky and sticking with their assertion you will use no controller at all with Natal).

But, Nintendo already has a console in the home of a fair chunk of that casual audience IMHO, and it may end up a case of Sony and MS fighting for scraps from the table.

Time will tell. Right now it's just normal PR - he sure wasn't going to say anything else, that's for sure!

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

EDIT: I can't read.

So does the Force Unleashed 2 use motion control? Cause if it does HOLY **** Epic game on the way!

@huaxiong90 -- Sorry for double-posting. I looked and could not find any reference to this. And the article I cited was only 5 hours old. So I figured it was no on the site.

@Kantor -- Regarding for shooters, I don't think Resistance is being talked about here. Combine motion and shooter and you get arcade/gun shooters (where you point at the screen) like House of the Dead that have been up until now solely found on the Wii. Both this type of game and sports games are casual in that they are more "pick up and play." And that is how I read the marketing speak, especially given the reference to the other consoles and Wii's game library and Microsoft's "Family Games" ad campaign.

why does shooter plus motion have to be light gun games? There are plenty of real shooters they could augment with the controls.

You can't simply build a "hardcore" console with a "mature" image and then slap on some peripheral made in semi desperation and think it'll reel in folks who belong to another market segment entirely. Naive at best, costly mistake at worst.
And unless there are some serious developers making some serious software to make this technology shine, there will be little to no incentive for the typical PS3 gamer to own this.

Like I've said for a year or so though, Sony and Microsoft are in a damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario and have been for some time. Don't release motion controls and be silly (at least according to the users in here) or release it and be silly because it'll never work (which is what we're seeing now).

I misread the article.

Please excuse me while I edit my rant.
