Forums - Nintendo - why do people/game journelists keep calling mario a casual game?

I wonder, given the intelligence of some of these "game journalists" if it has to do with more than "pick and play."

In other words, since the red is the color of Mario's outfit and not blood, it is therefore casual.
Since the graphics are cartoon rather than photo-realistic, it is therefore casual.

I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

Mario is quite casual, I remember my mom and one of my aunts used to stay up all night playing SMB 2 and 3 and Duck Hunt. Why is it so bad that someone calls it casual (or calls a shovel a shovel)?
It attracts both casual and "hardcore" gamers and that equals a lot more sales. And that's a good thing, right? So what's with the complaining over this?

If they stayed up all night playing it then they weren't playing it casually.  Just because they're your mom and aunt doesn't automatically mean they can't be playing a game in a hardcore manner.

The fact that they picked it up shows that it is casual, they also played games like Tetris and Dr.Mario somtimes, the fact that you can play it like a "hardcore" shows that its a casual title at the core which can be explored and mastered, much like WoW. Easy to get into, difficult to master like someone above me mentioned.

By the way, seeing as how they're my mother and aunt I happen to know for a fact that they weren't hardcore gamers... at all. My dad's kind of the same, he never sits down by himself to play games, but if I bring a console and a cool racing game he's all excited and gladly joins in!

I'm sensing that this might turn into another "what is a hardcore gamer?" discussion, though I hope it won't. I see myself as a hardcore gamer, not because I have an awesome talent or because I look down on those who don't share my interest but because I spend heaps of money and time on gaming, I spend time online discussing games, I strive to beat high scores and times and games are generally a big and important part of my spare time.

I'm not about to tell you if you're family members are hardcore gamers or not, you would definitely know better than I would.  I am just saying that if they stayed up all night playing a game then they were playing that specific game in a hardcore way.

I think I know why but I don't want to get banned =P

In the past, "casual" and "hardcores"were terms used to refer the way people played. You could been a casual doom player or a hardcore tetris one.

But since the wii disrupted the market, game journalists (whom are the game industry's puppets) use casual to mean "retards" and hardcore to mean "real players".

The fact that NSMBWii is selling like crazy is something that the industry cannot stand so they badmouth it with that term to decrease its value in the gamer's eyes.

Of course, is not working.

I dont really how Mario is more casual than Modern Warfare 2 or Halo 3

All those games are extremely accesible, and have huge following amongst people that do not really see themselves as gamers.

Mario roots aren't casual, and he sells like monster.

Mario has always been casual.

My colleagues on primary school know and play Mario, not to finish. They played once a week or month just for fun or to show a friend who had a game.

That in 1990.

You know you can play a hardcore game casually and a casual game in a hardcore way right?  I mean... what you just described were people playing a game casually, not a casual game.  Some people you know played Mario in a casual way, a lot of people I know play Mario in a hardcore way.

Casual and hardcore can describe gamers not games.

Because nowadays...

E = Early Childhood and the Elderly

E10 = Enjoy for 10 minutes before getting bored

T = Try it if you have nothing better to do

M = MUST PLAY NOW!

Pixel Art can be fun.

I know this. But for me:

* Casual games = Everyone plays.

* Hardcore games = Only hardcore games plays.

* Mario = Everyone plays = Casual games.

So... hardcore games is played only for hardcore gamers, but casual games can be played for both casual and hardcore gamers... of course, there are exceptions.

GTA for me is casual... most people are casual gamers... but the hardcore games play the game too.

IMO

It has no blood.

Of course Mario is casual. Just like WOW, Modern Warfare and Gran Turismo are casual.

Exactly.

Mario is, in it's base, a casual title, since it is very easy to pick up and play.

However, it also has a LOT of depth, and that's why it creates such a broad appeal.

Bet with Dr.A.Peter.Nintendo that Super Mario Galaxy 2 won't sell 15 million copies up to six months after it's release, the winner will get Avatar control for a week and signature control for a month.

You've got a point but I don't think FPS games are quite as accessible as people seem to think they are. Some people just can't get their head around the perspective and feel nauseous after 30 mins playing. Other people have difficulty with the controls whether, PC, dual analog or motion control.

A better example would probably be the GTA games, easy to get into and anyone can just pick up and play. But difficult to master/complete with all the missions and extras.
