You got it wrong Carl.... Gamers who loved old Final Fantasy games agree.
Who cares about western reviews for a japanese game?
If Lost Odyssey was PS3 exclusive, I CAN ASSURE YOU it would be praised as the "game you should buy a PS3 for". Playstation fans (who loved PS1 and PS2 JRPGs) waited so long for a game like this this gen... (Soon FF13).
In 2007, if Lost Odyssey was released on PS3, it would have been called "Game of the Year" by the long-time playstation JRPG userbase...
Sadly for them, it was released on the 360. So instead of buying a 360 and expand their game collection... they prefered to downgrade the game on forums and stuff... Bitter behavior.
Sad but true. Brand loyalty creates injustice.

I didn't play Lost Odyssey but I guess you are right.

Meh, not entirely true. I for one thought Suikoden series was....ok along with several other JRPG's. FFVII didn't blow me away (I did prefer 8), FFX was ok (I was dissapointed actually after playing IX). For a while now it takes quite a bit for a JRPG to impress me, let alone get the GOTY vote from me. When I look back, I have held Vagrant Story, Ar Tonelico 2 (minus that game breaking glitch, bad job NIS localizing it), Legend of Dragoon, Xenogears, Valkyrie Profile 1 and 2, all on par and better than the FF series. Also the pacing in LO was next to horrible, and Nobuo's choice for music left alot to be desired (hey at least it's better than Rad Racer). Like someone else mentioned, the thousand year dream stuff was cool, but still didn't do it for me along with the battle system in this day and age.
Some games just have to evolve and rely on more than just gimmicks to get by. Vagrant Story for example had a great combat system along with the storyline, and I would hope for a sequel. Demon's Souls was really the rpg for me and has taken me back to the old school days when a game "didn't hold your hand", and THAT game I could call a GOTY. I will also give a nod to Dragon Age and ME. Although ME isn't my thing, I could appreciate the story and decision making of that game, but LO....meh.
