HD DVD Players Going for $100

In what appears to be a new strategy in the high-definition DVD wars, Best Buy and Wal-Mart have announced that they are dropping the price of HD DVD players below $100. In-store sales of the players were expected to begin today (Friday). They are listed as sold-out on the stores' websites.

That would mean that it is at least a good 80 dollars less than the 360 attachment.
A good buy but apparently all sold out already.

Maybe I'm just a skeptical ass but I have a hard time reading anything written by a so-called enthusiast who mentions that the A2 "doesn't even do 1080p". This entire 1080p propoganda thing is getting out of hand. I have yet to find a real use for it unless you double your TV as a computer monitor.

Maybe when the PS4 and nextbox release, there will be a real use for it but as long as films are shot at 24fps, movies look just as good in 1080i as they do 1080p.

Man this is sweet. Almost everyone I know with an HD set is going HD-DVD. This is a *huge* deal -- even their new model can be purchased for $180.

That explains it. 1080i is essentially 1080p that only displays every other line, halfing the speed in which data is fully displayed. Since movies only display at 24fps, this has zero impact on the picture quality. All 1080p does is replicate the same frame multiple times to compensate.

So, TV broadcasts are all 720p/1080i, the 360 and PS3 appear to be stuck around 720p in large-environment games, and 1080i is just as good as 1080p for movies.

It makes it hard to justify the extra money needed for a 1080p set unless you're planning on keeping it long enough to play the next generation of gaming systems, which will be the only real use for 1080p sets in the forseeable future.

HD-dvd sales are up, and they lower the cost of the players seems like desperation? clever marketing maybe, getting rid of old players maybe, but more knowledge on this subject is needed before drawing conclusions. Are they selling them for less than production costs? Then its desperate, but if they sell them for cost, or they still make a profit then its smart marketing strategy, I can't imagine a compnay creating a product and selling it for less money than they used to produce it, and then when nobody was buying it they kept lowering the price of that product ot hopefully stir up sales of the lackluster electronic.

LCDs and Plasmas don't do interlace. They are progressive in nature. Film is 1080p 24fps. That means a movie on 1080i and a movie on 1080p are essentially identical. They contain the same 1000 lines of data. One fed progressively and one fed in two parts. Either way they are displayed as a single image as, again, LCDs and Plasmas (digital TVs) don't do interlace.

There is massive irony in watching blu-ray people poo poo 1080i vs. 1080p when it comes to moves as it is pretty much irrelevant if your TV and player are good quality. It is so ironic because movies don't matter. On a PS3, when playing games, it DOES matter and somehow that is making movies matter by default. It's all terribly amusing once you go out and educate yourself.

Here's a start for you... you can take it from there on your own....

nifty quote inside:

...let me say this in big bold print, as far as movies are concerned THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 1080i AND 1080p..."

Haha, sounds like a certain company who's gaming platform is selling WAY under expectations, hmmm.
