Forums - Microsoft - Why Xbox 360 is losing appeal to new customers.

It's simple MS invested all their money in stealing Sony's exclusives and paying off devs for timed exclusive and to lie about it, but now that all the timed exclusive are on ps3 combined with the fact Sony has made new IP after new IP the 360s exclusives list sucks compared to the ps3 not to mention the failrate is still an issue and the now banning anything that has been modded in any way to increase sales, the only real advantage MS had was it's timed exclusive and the fact it was cheaper in stores now that it has neither it's seen for what it is a waste of money

You won't find any bias or misinformation in this post!

Is this really vgaddict already?  Man you just hop on from one alt account to another as soon as you get banned, don't you?

@nightsurge : no, wrong again. According to recent numbers, PS3 sold a lot more than 360 even in NA (see black friday numbers on first page ;) )

While the cheaper 360 is still a lot cheaper than the cheaper PS3...

Yup, PS3 has sold 'a lot more' than 360 around here.

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 04th Sep 2005 to 28th Nov 2009:

Console PS3 X360
America
10,930,133
19,711,221

It outsold the 360 on black friday and I believe I may have outsold it for the month of November "recent numbers"

No doubt many of those sales were from people getting a new 360 after MS banned their console, the timing is so obvious MS started banning consoles to increase sales they don't give a shit about pirates and aren't doing much to stop them they can still play modded games on their console offline and they don't even lose their gamertag in most cases

I like when Microsoft does the timed exclusives with the XBox 360...Because I have a Ps3.
Thus far, there seems to be a good amount of developers that then fix things that they wish they did differently when going from that end of the exclusivity to the other console. (i.e. Eternal Sonata)

Just waiting for that PS Vita to come out so I can play some full featured games on the go with that beautiful screen and control scheme...

Its funny becuase let me tell you my story that relates to all of this.Im new here but when i seen this topic i had to respond.Been reading vgchartz for like 3 years so not really new but lets move on.

I bought a 360 back about 4 years ago.Loved thought it was the greatest gaming machine ever built next to my dreamcast.I kinda skipped the whole ps2 and xbox i bought them but got rid of them just as quick and always preffered my dreamcast. When the 360 released i was kind of nervouse i knew i didnt like the xbox to much altho i liked it better than the ps2 because of live.I didnt want to buy right aways so i waited. When i finaly bought one i realised how awesome it was and soon everyone i know followed cousins nephews everyone. We all gamed online together playing halo3 farcry2 and others.Xbox live was amazing for this my cousin in germany would chat with my via the webcam and on the bigtv it was really great.

One of my cousins ended up with aps3 becuase of his mother bought it for him altho he wanted a 360.She listened to the idiot guy at a walmart and he talked her into a 40gb right when they started phasing out the 60gb.I was pissed but this aunt of mine has some jealousy issues i guess after she bought it she felt she got better than what everyone else had.She had missed a huge point.Everyone had a 360 and now her kid would game alone.

I had had a 360 rrod on me so i sent to be fixed while it was being fixed the arcade was released at 199.So i decided to grab one and i then gave the one i got back to my cousin. After that everything was all good.He borrowed a wireless adapter and we were gaming.Eventually he ended up having top give back the adapter and with no job he couldnt play online anymore as his mother wouldnt pay for live. And he didnt have the adapter.

Months go bye and i decide i want to sell my 360 and quit gaming and move on with my life work more hours etc.I sell my 360 and then decide i would get a ps3 for bluray or whatever and killzone looked good i figured i wouldnt play it as much as 360 so no harm done. The new slim was released so i bought one.

I bought killzone 2 and thought might as well give it a try.Got home hooked it up and no headset and damn i was mad.So then i found a old bluetooth and it worked and figured i was good to go.Go to message my cousin to suprise him and guess what no cross game chat i was pissed.I calmed self down said atleast you aint paying for it.Take out kz2 start to play and i instantly hated it.The graphics were amazing no doubt about it but the way it played was awfull. The controller would make my hands ache and the slow pace of the movement was awfull.

I downloaded a couple demos and some were really good.I liked that they had one of my old favorite pc air sims which was nice altho it played like shit.Warhawk was preety good the only thing that sucked was i couldnt parrachute.Blurays looked like shit to me i did all settings in the menus etc but for some reason my hddvds looked better.

I was working alot by this time and the ps3 got dusty my cousin never wanted to play anything the chat features sucked so socilaizing was a pain in the ass the controller felt awfull home was a joke just a bunch of kids running around calling you newb becuase you wouldnt buy virtual clothes really pathetic.

I ended up selling it i just didnt need it.I wanted a 360 again and a few weeks later i said screw it and bought a elite. Now im back and i never felt more at home.My cousins hate me because i sold it to begin with but the fact that its so easy to meet new people makes it no problem to become part of differrent gangs.I mean i get friends request all day and i can just easily que them up and talk to em no matter what.I can play music when i play all my games and everyhting just works like it should.

What people really need to ask themselves when purchasing a new system is.

Do i really need wifi and a bluray player if im buying this for gaming and also they need to ask themselves how important socialising when gaming is to them.

Lets face the 360 isnt hardware its a piece of shit in that department and i dont mean that by power because it can run next to a ps3 anyday. And dont give any shit about kz2 uncharted 2 i played em and i have seen games on 360 that rival those. What i mean was reliability it sucks in that aspect but your seriouse about gaming and socialising two things that go together like chicken nuggets and sweet and sour sauce than theres no better platform.

They may not give you wireless and a bluray player but for gmaing nothing comes close.Would i ever buy a ps3 again?

The answer is no i may buy a bluray player down the road there cheap enough now even tho it was not what i wanted quality wise i may have to get one for hd movies that may release i like.

I just bought a 360 hddvd drive for 40 dollars new and 20 movies for 50 cents a piece new. Those same movies on bluray would cost 25 dollars or more.

So when you say value let me ask you this.

You go to a store and theres two flashlights.Ones brighter than the other but one comes with a radio for the same price.Which one would you purchase?

Well lets see:

I think things like the PS3s recent exclusives, Wifi, cost of live, relative price of the Xbox 360 vs PS3 = overstated relative to the actual difference they make.

The fact that the PS3 is the sequel to the strongest selling console of all times is understated.

Is the fact that Live costs a problem? Hell no! Its better than PSN and it has a better adoption rate amongst those whom really care about online gaming.

Is the fact that the PS3 got a few good exclusives recently a problem? Hell no because a lot hardly sold anything and you can measure your market impact from units moved not metacritic points acquired. The only big one is Uncharted 2 and thats not as big an impact as Gears of War so its still a large but not massive exclusive.

Is the fact that Xbox 360 doesn't come with wireless a problem? No because a lot of American homes have cable right next to their TVs and its online experience is still better and worth the extra money you'd pay for the adapter.

Is the fact that the PS3 comes with Blu Ray a problem? Nope because players come with remotes and people like remotes and these players with free remotes only really cost like $100-150 and they use far less power than the PS3 and are much quieter.

1. I think it's a problem. It's a problem of value in the eyes of the consumer. It might also be an issue with people not having access to credit cards etc. Actual stats for this we'll never know.

2. What does Gears have to do with anything? Sony recently released some compelling software on it's system, which moved units. That's a problem. The impact might not be huge, but we've only seen a few weeks of U2 sales. It's market impact will lie well beyond that measure.

3. I thought we were talking WW here.  It's also an issue of value. Even if the consumer doesn't really need it, if it's thrown in for (seemingly) free, it can make the product more desirable.

4. Your point seems to be concerned with consumers only interested in BR. I have no idea the size of the market segment interested in both a gaming machine and a BR player, but it exists.

1. WoW is a paid service with a lot of essentially similar free services out there and it survives and thrives. Its a network effect as both Live and PSN cannot talk to each other people have to choose what their friends have, not which is cheapest or offers the best price/value.

2. Its compelling for PS3, but until it gets some big sales numbers it doesn't really imply or explain anything. Its big but its not as big as something like Gears of War which defined a whole holiday season somewhat by itself. Its not enough really to bother to list as a reason why the XB isn't doing as well relative to the PS3 at present.

3. Well X % will never go online (1/3rd to 1/2) so theres that. Of the people whom do go online its only a problem for those cross shopping the PS3 and Xbox 360. These are people who haven't been pulled in a particular direction anyway. Most of the people whom a PS3 and Xbox 360 is an equal choice will pick the PS3 because Playstation is the brand they know. In this case whether wireless is there or not is irrelevant.

4. I don't doubt that it exists but you have to consider that X % already have a BR player, X % of people want a seperate one, X % don't want one at all. Its an added feature 'free' so its utility varies. I changed the colour setting on my Bravia, that makes me like one of 5% of people to touch that setting. Its hard to say what impact the feature has for the console, but since it only relates to one specific segment it doesn't speak of the overall dynamic and should probably be ignored as theres too much uncertainty and that metric is changing all the time.

1. I'm not saying LIVE can't thrive or survive. My point is that at this moment in time, the value and selling point of the service LIVE has been somewhat reduced in the eyes of informed consumers, because of the availability of a very similiar service free of charge on a competiting system. It's just another factor to be weighed up before making a decision.

World of Warcraft is, in my opinion, far and above the best MMO available, it's very accessible and it's had a long time to grow it's install base (many of whom become addicted to it). I would aliken the MMO market to the situation between LIVE and PSN at the start of this gen. One competitor offering a long standing service with a great track record and lots of publicity, going toe to toe with a similiar but much more basic system for free. Gamers were willing to pay for the marked differences. I had a gold account back then.

2. My point was that Uncharted sold systems and will continue too. How is that not a problem? Because of it's scale? It's just one more factor in dozens and dozens influencing a consumers choice at the moment. A new AAA game that looks to outsell the original.

3. I'm not sure it's a non-issue. It's adds value to the console. We can agree to disagree on this one.

4. That's why I said market segment. There's a segment that's interested in both. Sure the consumers overlap into other segments, but the segment no doubt exists. I was simply refuting your statement that implied that becuase there were cheaper standalone BR's available, PS3 sales would not be effected by the added BR. It is, but as you put it, we have no idea to what degree.

I'll just add that the reason for my reply was that you seemed to be dissmissing what could very well be valuable selling points for thousands of consumers. You also seemed to be implying that price and brand name alone were the sole contributing factors to the current level of PS3 sales. While I agree they probably play a vital role in consumers decisions at present, simply stating 'No' to the rest of the selling points just isn't accurate.

Nothing specifically wrong.  More the entire thing, and the reasons for posting it.  You clearly are as biased as they come and will only ever say negative things about the 360.  Including trying to perceive people with lies or conspiracy theories.  The 360 failure rate is no where near an issue anymore.  All new 360's have 4% failure rate or lower.  Not to mention MS has been banning modded consoles for years now.  And they even released a statement saying they did not ban 1 million people this last time around.  And they only banned modded 360s that could play pirated games.  Not modded 360's that had better cooling or case mods.

And then you claim the 360's exclusives suck even though they all sell much better than PS3 exclusives... and you say the 360 is just a waste of money... clearly bias free!!!

Sony can only blackmail Japanese devs, not others from different countries. Most Japanese devs depend on Japanese sales and Sony knows they have them by the balls, so whatever Microsoft has to pay for Sony doesn't essentially because they represent the same country.
