Why Flowerworks Wii >> Flowerworks PC
For todays rant, I'm going to talk about why Flowerworks is better on the Wii than on the PC (this is comparing the PC to the Wii version):
There are two main reasons:
1/ Wiimote is better than a mouse:
This doesn't hold true for all games - but the first thing we noticed with Flowerworks on the Wii, is how good it felt. Moving Follie around the screen (you basically point to where she should go, and she moves there) feels a LOT better than moving her around with a mouse. And even further, the Wii version feels more accurate - probably because you are pointing to a location directly.
2/ Extra polish/features:
When you play a game on a console (compared to a PC), all the little glitches become very apparent and very annoying. We made a significant number of improvements to the Wii version of Flowerworks, and the result is a much improved game.
In fact - the only area that the PC version is superior to the Wii version - is really the audio. To reduce space (we really wanted to get the Wii version under 16MB), both the music tracks and sound effects are lower quality than the PC version. They still sound great though, and IMO our composer did a great job with them.
Graphically - both skews are identical. The Wii has slightly lower texture sizes, but this is more to match the lower output resolution (PC obviously runs at a higher resolution than 480p). The Wii has a better (and true) widescreen implementation though.
Some of differences between the two versions include:
- physics based bubble-popping (feels a lot better, good call Carl :>)
- optimised HUD (less buttons cluttering the screen)
- new Follie diary (tracks your adventure)
- zoom feature on the overworld map
- much cooler star meter, for the end of levels
- preset character names (always hate entering a name on consoles)
- better startup flow (less screens)
- more control shortcuts
- 'waggle' gnome pacify mini-game
- better arcade mode
Anyway - I think its rare for a Wii game to actually end up better than a PC skew, so it was worth a mention :)
