Forums - Sony - Sony NOT Learning from PS3 Mistakes - 3D TV Plan Will Fail

San Francisco (CA) - Sony has pledged to lead the "commercialization" of 3D by introducing a 3D compatible BRAVIA LCD TV in 2010. Unfortunately, Sony's latest initiative is likely to fail spectacularly.

"The shiny device will undoubtedly face the same challenges as Sony's early iterations of the Playstation 3, including higher manufacturing costs and lack of supported content."

Interesting article.  It seems like Sony is putting the cart before the horse once again by releasing a product that has very little consumer demand.  Confusing they would pin all their company's turnaround hopes on such a niche product.  Only time will tell if they are successful.

Of course it will fail, first most people are happy with their non-3D HDTV's at the moment, secondly you need 3D glasses, which are stupid for when you're in the house, not to mention those glasses are like $200 each

They need to focus on making 3D tv's which don't require glasses, and wait for a few years until people are ready to replace their current HDTV's, then it might take off

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Well, people are just seeing the need to upgrade to HD.

3D... Come back in a few years time, and try again.

It's a nice a feature and all... But I don't think we are ready I mean I just blew a couple of hundred bucks on an HDTV, do you really think I am going to upgrade to 3D HDTV any time soon? o_O; Maybe in 5 - 6 years..

this completely contradicts your mad rant in my forum saying Sony is not on the cutting edge of tech. According to this, they're not just on the cutting edge they're beyond it lol. The ps3 was to ahead of its time, and now this.

soooooo, Sony, you slow down or..................... the rest of the world needs to catch up imo??

Huh??!!

My 3-D glasses were free when I watched My Bloody Valentine in 3-D at the movie theatre.

Not sure why anyone would pay $200 for 3-D glasses.

Where are you getting this information??

Let Sony do as planned with 3D instead of waiting for another consumer electronic company to do it 1st. Let people see what they can expect with 3D TV's, demo them in stores and at trade showes, they gotta start some where so why not do it now or in 2010 like they planned.

All this doom is way too early. Sony is making the right move here, create a consumer market before any other company, once a competion joins lower the price until it's affordable for the masses, just like they did with bluray.

Well, technologically speaking, with Blu-ray having so much storage, it is only natural that people will look for more things to do with it.

Also, we are on the verge of OLED TVs coming into the market, and it looks as if they will replace LCD by 2020, because they give a superior picture, will be cheaper and more energy efficient ect. We should have TV's that are about 20% cheaper than their LCD counterparts but a lot better....that would get more people into the 3D and blu-ray thing if and when realized.

Also, keep in mind that Sony probably wants to do something just like Blu-ray, to make money off of the intellectual property. If this takes off, Sony will be getting royalties from TV makers using the 3D technology, and from studios putting 3d content on their movies.

I think that this is a fabulous idea, that like Blu-ray will take a long time to get popular. I know that Sony can do it, and look forward to more good things to my favorite company.
