This really convinced me that the Wii should be able to put out HD resolutions, especially when I consider that all the games I played on HD consoles were so much more fun than NSMB Wii.

I think some Wii games are possible to do 720p, especially with games like NSMB:Wii that don't depend on high super-realistic 3D graphics, they only use artistic 3D models with 2D environment, and there's not a lot of stuff going on the screen at the same time, that alone can be done with the GC Gekko...

But i think that the Wii output is locked at 480p, even with component cables...

I don't think anyone actually knows whether the Wii hardware allows 720p, or if it's just blocked in the firmware. Maybe some of the homebrew hackers know, though.

I guess Nintendo doesn't want people to know either. They made their decision on 480p this gen, and aren't going to stir up any shit by making some games in 720p even if technically possible.

Due to only having 3 MB for the frame buffer, you can't output to high resolutions. You could use the 1TRAM or the GDDR3 to store both the front and the back buffers, but it would be very slow to maintain an acceptable frame rate. It's not locked at a software level, it's more a hardware limitation, due to a design decision.

Well, the character models are bigger and nicer-looking

But all the sprite art (including the coins, boxes, and backgrounds) look.... well, bad. This is why we don't go into higher resolutions for sprite-based art without higher-resolution art to compensate, people!

I'll be honest with you: I prefer it SD.

With this high resolution, it's easy to see the polygons and the overall lack of detail there. SD is masking that.

Been there, done that. Still don't see a difference. I play games on my PC pretty much daily, and always in "HD" resolutions. I see absolutely no difference.

Starcraft 2 ID: Gnizmo 229

I've been playing Wind Waker through the PC emulator using 4x AA, V-Sync, 1050x1680 resolution, true 16:9 (which the original didn't have), etc. It looks much, much, better than the original. Now that they fixed the excessively large hud sprites in the newest release, it looks just about flawless. Smash Bros Brawl is another great looking one that comes to mind.

The whole "there's no difference"... thing people are saying is probably true for some games, but certainly isn't true for all games. Especially on a nice monitor or TV.

... I'm sorry, I'm probably really stupid when it comes to this stuff, but honest to god, I can't see a difference.

Somehow I doubt it. I don't see how turning a Wii-game HD suddenly makes it look better. But as I said, I probably suck at this stuff so that might be why.

HD TV.

I have a HDTV downstairs, where my 360 is hooked up. Now, I haven't played my Wii games on it, but I have played other games on it like Symphony of the Night, and I don't see the big deal.

Now that those NSMBWii pics are showing, there's a very clear resolution bump. I doubt that's how Miyamoto intended you'd the playing the game, but textures look sharper and there is an obvious reduction in jaggies, particularly around the character models.

Textures look sharper? Lack of jaggies? I got the exact opposite impression - just look at the freaking coin.

The character and enemy models look better (mario, luigi, toads, the fish). As a whole, yes, the textures look sharper. Obviously there are exceptions such as the coins.

The backgrounds look pretty reprehensible
