This really convinced me that the Wii should be able to put out HD resolutions, especially when I consider that all the games I played on HD consoles were so much more fun than NSMB Wii.

I think some Wii games are possible to do 720p, especially with games like NSMB:Wii that don't depend on high super-realistic 3D graphics, they only use artistic 3D models with 2D environment, and there's not a lot of stuff going on the screen at the same time, that alone can be done with the GC Gekko...

But i think that the Wii output is locked at 480p, even with component cables...

I don't think anyone actually knows whether the Wii hardware allows 720p, or if it's just blocked in the firmware. Maybe some of the homebrew hackers know, though.

I guess Nintendo doesn't want people to know either. They made their decision on 480p this gen, and aren't going to stir up any shit by making some games in 720p even if technically possible.

Due to only having 3 MB for the frame buffer, you can't output to high resolutions. You could use the 1TRAM or the GDDR3 to store both the front and the back buffers, but it would be very slow to maintain an acceptable frame rate. It's not locked at a software level, it's more a hardware limitation, due to a design decision.
