Forums - Sales - NSMB Wii sells 936,734 units first week (Famitsu)

So anyway that first week was pretty awesome

I am now entertaining the idea that it could go on to break five million in Japan, like its elder brother did

While I think now the game would break 3 mil in Japan (was predicting just short of 3 mil), I really don't see it selling more than Wii Sports. Not to mention break 5 mil. The last console game that sold more than 5 mil in Japan was... Super Mario Bro. on NES and that's the only one.

Even 4 mil Brett predicted would be a reach. The last console game that sold more than 4 mil was DQ VII. Actually DQVII and SMB are the only two console games ever sold more than 4 mil in Japan. If NSMB Wii could join them, it would be fantastic. However, it's just not likely.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

So, now that we know that NSMB Wii did well...

How much longer until we (normally) get some other numbers? I'm curious how SW3 performed.

Also, does anyone think this game may never be overtaken by FFXIII? As long as its 3rd week sales are higher than FFXIII's 1st, and 4th over 2nd, I think there's no turning back.

There's a chance, though hopefully FFXIII does better than that.

I don't see how NSMBWii's 3rd week numbers would be higher than FFXIII'a first week, which is expected to be anything between 1-1.6 million?

That said, I don't see FFXIII sales "overtaking" NSMBWii, certainly not in the long run. Short run, I can see that happening though I doubt it.

Oh, I meant NSMBWii's total sales up until (and including) its 3rd week. That would put it around 1.3-1.5mil, which is around what some are expecting for FFXIII's first week.

Yes, I think it has a chance. I expect Final Fantasy XIII to sell about 1.4M-1.5M in its first week, New Super Mario Bros Wii should only have to sell about 600k during the next 2 weeks.

New Super Mario Bros --- 1st week 937.000 --- 2nd week --- 350.000 --- 3rd week --- 255.000 ---  Total by Final Fantasy XIII launch 1.542.000.

great sales. but i want to ask u guys one thing, why the sales of nsmb is so IMPORTAN? ea just annouced DS2, and wii is not getting it.

for some reason wii is not getting a good ip making more noise to me than the sales. i dont want to derail the thread, but just want to make a point that sales is not that important.

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

... Uh, what? Sales are the endgame for anyone making a game. Sales is the most important thing to any game developer.

Well, actually, the most important thing is profits. Which are a direct result of sales.

... What are you talking about, man?

I dunno FF13's fisrt week is UP in the air.

Famitsu predicted 1 - 1.1 million

but lately has been wrong on many PS3 games (bayonetta & WE 2010 crossed Famitsu's LTD prediction in a week itself)

Next a retailer claimed its ahead of FF12 pre-orders a month before its launch (FF12 sold 1.8 million in week 1)

Finally there are hardware bundles (FF13 + PS3)....who knows how many there are (there could range from 1.3K in quantity to 131,13K

FF13's 1st week is up in the air

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

@Majin-Tenshinhan, @RolStoppable, i know sales r important. and its ok for u guys if wii dont get DS2(and more good ip wii will not get in future).

but for wii only owners like me it's not a good news.(i'll not post anymore about this subject in this thread to keep the thread on track)

Alright to comment on something ioi said, in holidays sales aren't more front loaded and sell better over that timespan. This is absolutely true and not hard to understand why. Take a game that releases in June and a game that releases in December. Let's say both open to 200,000. In June, the number of people buying a new console or just in a store buying video games is going to be exponentially less than that of someone in December. We call this increase holiday boosts or our general holiday increases. Thus meaning generally they might open to similar sales but because of normal holiday boosts the game released in December will sell more in the subsequent weeks then the game released in June. However, usually because of this and competition, it won't open to such high numbers either but worked for the sake of the example.

OT: as for the sales they are simply incredible. It does seem by the end of the year the game will have at least crossed 2 million. Compare this game and Wii Fit Plus to Nintendo's last holiday season offerings in Japan and you can see how this is a much better predicament for them.

... But... That has nothing to do with anything.

Seriously, you're confusing the shit out of me.
