OK, but could you explain why this game's attach rate isn't close to Halo's, for instance? Nearly 50 % of the Xbox 360 owners back in 2007 picked it up within 24 hours of availability? If this game's colossal, shouldn't it do something similar?

No one cares if it didn't sell as much as Modern Warfare 2 (nice pick there, you had to choose the one game that makes Halo 3 look reasonable in terms of standards), no one cares if it didn't sell as much first-week as DQIX, no one cares if FFXIII will beat its first-week numbers, no one cares if Halo's launch was bigger attach rate was more exaggerated. This is about Mario. It's being compared to New Super Mario Brothers on the DS because that's the most direct parallel that can be drawn this gen, and that particular game outsold any other property mentioned so far in Japan.

What about Halo? It sold 2.8 million and was on one console, and it was in 2007.

Your numbers are wrong. Halo 3 sold impressive 62,415 Units in Japan in it's first week.

Holy shit! i expected around 800-850k which would've been awesome. Preview was dead on, awesome job. And yeah people started saying absurd things about first day sales and i'm sure it will happen on FF13 week where they'll try to downsize the first week.

Anyways this is awesome, i never expected it to outperform the DS version, now its officially the best first week for a mario game.

Also if any info comes in about SW3 i'd appreciate it, if the preview is also accurate then 160k would be an amazing number and it goes with my prediction that the hardware boost helped the game

Anyway, you can have your own opinions, guys. If you think these sales are "awesome", then fine. I think they're PRETTY good. But there are better. Modern Warfare 2 generated $550 million at retail in 5 days. That's awesome, if you ask me.

wow, halo did massive in Japan

Halo's U.S. 24-hour launch exceeds NSMB's worldwide week-1 sales by more than 500k, but yeah...

And NSMB was released when Wii is 50 million+, Halo? 11 million.

The problem is that you're completely ignoring the issue. You're comparing a game which will sell over time with games that are extremely frontloaded, and you're comparing it to american sales which are a lot bigger than japanese sales are and always have been. I'm not completely certain, but even counting handhelds I think the only game to have an opening higher than this in Japan is Dragon Quest IX.

Wow, Mario got beaten by the latest main installment of Japan's most popular franchise. Opinions are fine, but the fact of the matter here is that you're just plain wrong.

EDIT: Of course, with higher openings, I mean this gen only.

What? That's not awesome. I think Modern Warfare was a flop because it didn't sell 20 million copies first day.... in Japan.

See how stupid I sound?

wow, that guy won't listen, any mod?
