It wasn't BRILLIANT or anything, but it was a solid game, with great graphics, a nice soundtrack, some good platforming, and an interesting approach to combat. The "puzzles" left something to be desired and combat, except with bosses was a bit shallow. Also, it was FAR too easy. No part of that game even bordered on reasonably difficult. Other than that, though, it was enjoyable. |
Lets not forget that the 2nd 2 PoP games also got some heat back in the day. Especially WW.
To answer your question, I think PoP2008 got some much hell for some good reasons and some bad. Had it not been a PoP game I think people would be kinder. Sadly it pretty much took the existing formula and dumbed it down so even a half-wit could beat the game no problem. That is a huge problem for a series that has always been a friend to the hardcore gamer. Sure by 3rd controls had gotten a little conveluted, and a refresh was to be expected. But making the puzzles non existant, the combat simplistic, and the levels mindlessly easy to navigate turned off a lot of us. Frankly the new prince, and the artstyle while interesting were misestimations as well. PoP players never asked for cell shading- it just never fit quite right.
Somewhere in PoP 2008 tha same thing happened as with WW, sombody got the idea that changing a major element of what had made the games successfull would somehow boost sales. Many of us could have told them this whole reboot was a dumb idea in the first place. Of course they realize that now. I just hope fans of the SoT trilogy give them another chance.
Edit: As a side note despite its massive inferiority to the trilogy, I still mostly enjoy PoP2008. Anybody who ever played the Ninja Turtles game based on the PoP engine would be amazed at the similarity. Both are fun, but seem like they are on training wheels.
