Lets not forget that the 2nd 2 PoP games also got some heat back in the day. Especially WW.
To answer your question, I think PoP2008 got some much hell for some good reasons and some bad. Had it not been a PoP game I think people would be kinder. Sadly it pretty much took the existing formula and dumbed it down so even a half-wit could beat the game no problem. That is a huge problem for a series that has always been a friend to the hardcore gamer. Sure by 3rd controls had gotten a little conveluted, and a refresh was to be expected. But making the puzzles non existant, the combat simplistic, and the levels mindlessly easy to navigate turned off a lot of us. Frankly the new prince, and the artstyle while interesting were misestimations as well. PoP players never asked for cell shading- it just never fit quite right.
Somewhere in PoP 2008 tha same thing happened as with WW, sombody got the idea that changing a major element of what had made the games successfull would somehow boost sales. Many of us could have told them this whole reboot was a dumb idea in the first place. Of course they realize that now. I just hope fans of the SoT trilogy give them another chance. |
I liked PoP2008 as a sort of spin-off, a one-off refresh of the series. Nothing to replace the main PoP franchise.
And I think it succeeded in that endeavour.
