Forums - General - Switzerland bans minarets.

Switzerland is very proud on his unique towns it is that what also attracts many tourists 'that typical swizz feeling'.

I can understand why allowing minarets would hurt those towns look and let the typical Swizz feeling go away for his inhabitants.

Good that Switzerland let his citizens choose this is a win for democracy. Many people in other cities saw their towns change without the ability to vote about it.

I tell ya Europe is getting doomed if this continue.  An Dutch politician wants to ban the Koran, France and belgium(part of) don't allow scarfs on schools, Swizz doing this,  An Arabian Europe leaque that wants to stop the trade with USA and a law where all European children on school should atleast get one year Arabic etc.

A civil war is coming I tell ya.

1. It's a reasonable point to make that if you have historic towns, certain buildings can offset their beauty or historical attraction however there is no need for an all out ban on minarets to prevent this (even though they may actaully improve the beauty of the town). The minarets should simply go through the normal planning permision channels like every other building and if the construction of one in a certain area would inhibit the historical significanace then simply deny permision. A blanket ban is unnecessary as there are certain to be places where minarets will have no impact on a towns historical architecture.

2. There is, has been, and always will be manipulative and prejudice people in the world but that doesn't mean they will necessarily impose their views on everyone else.

3. The burka is banned in Turkey in all state run places (universities, public offices ect). It isn't unusual in secular governments (even in a country made up of >98% muslims).

4. Will never happen.

:-/ this is painting a really intolerant view of europe.
First companies come out and say they had to take black people out of ads in europe because of racism, now this.

I thought the US was supposed to be the ignorant racists?
Just an assault on those that had that *wrong* view.

This is only one country in Europe... you can't generalise this case for the rest of Europe. It would be like saying that North America has a massive drug crime problem just because Mexico has.

actually, the racist ad refrence was about the UK.

And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this PS4... And this gaming PC. - The PS4 and the Gaming PC and that's all I need... I'll only reply to that, don't care about the rest of the discussion.

Scarfs are banned in Belgian Schools, Belgian STATE schools. And not only scarfs, but crosses, red dot Indian (don't mean to offend, I just don't know the actual word) etc.  as well.

It is banned because our government considers STATE schools as a neutral ground with no place for religion outside the optional "Religion courses".

You can always go to private schools/catholic schools/STEINER schools/etc.

Was this about the advert in the Sun where they edited out the black person? I think the newspaper and the newspapers readership is more to blame if that is the case you are referring to. The Sun tends to be a more, ahem, white paper.

If it makes any difference, the same advert did not have the black person edited out in other newspapers and the Sun was criticised heavily for doing. Either way I don't think I or the majority of the UK would condone what they did.

Do you also get your money back that you paid to fund those schools?

The state pays for your education (beside some fees of course) if you can not afford it, doesn't matter the type of school you attend.  There are significant differences in the schools, but in the end the same minimum of material will have been taught.

I think Flanders (Dutch/flemish side of Belgium) uses 50 % of their budget on Education (lemme find a source).

democracy, you can't argue with it.

The people make the country not the other way round.

Quite so, if they feel they have something to protect, by all means leave them to their own devices, why would muslims want to live in such a hostile environment anyway?

I have often though that all religious buildings should be secular and featurless (aside from examples of fine architecture and listed buildings), red brick churches and mosques just look ugly regardless of religion, much easier to have something like this

Its also cheaper and can be used for many purposes, you could have a church and mosque in one, hows that for promoting unity.

I went to a 50% muslim school, we had plenty of racial incidents, but on the whole we all got along, its not a matter of religion, its a clash of culture and a failing of countries to assymilate new migrants, it would not be hard to solve these problems, I have some muslim friends who are as right wing as me on some issues, they tend to be the ones whos families have lived in the UK for a long time.

sorry whats a minoret?

It's a type of tower you generally find on mosques. They are actually quite pretty features to be honest.

Thanks for informing

I guess the people of Switzerland don't appreciate beautiful architecture.
