Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft: Project Natal to replace remote controls

I think for media purposes NATAL is a great step in the right direction. I don't think NATAL will get the adoption needed to change all this but it's technologies and principals might.

While I realize that my taste is not indicative of most consumers I will say that I can't see it ever satisfying all my gaming needs. So much for one channel. Microsoft is more than welcome to change my mind but they haven't shown anything capable of that yet.

it would be nice that you just had to step in front of your TV and it would set up everything to your pereferance... even my grandfather would like that... course it would be the westerns and CNN -_-

@.jayderyu: I don't think there's much of a future with Natal interface with TV:s. There were some handy features mentioned with channel lists chosen with face recognition software.

@Lord Flashheart: Pointless comments? Don't you think commenting the people who comment what is said in the OP is more pointless?
I thought the guy interviewed was talking about integrating games consoles and internet. This same company also happens to segregate its console and internet with the lack of webbrowser.

You think xoj and his usual bs against MS is not pointless?
Or your first comment? I can't think of a more stupid example of irony than you gave. And yes that includes Alanis Morisette. So for a console manufacturer to be allowed to talk about the internet with consoles the console should have a browser?  the fact that they made online gaming a standard with live which needs the internet is lost on you?   or that it has the most successful console internet service around new to you? Just how do you play online with your consoles without the intenet?

Oh I see you only have ninty consoles. Nevermind that last comment about playing online.

MS has segreagted what?

om Wiki
"The terms Internet and World Wide Web are often used in everyday speech without much distinction. However, the Internet and the World Wide Web are not one and the same. The Internet is a global data communications system. It is a hardware and software infrastructure that provides connectivity between computers. In contrast, the Web is one of the services communicated via the Internet. It is a collection of interconnected documents and other resources, linked by hyperlinks and URLs.[1]"

Here's the quote

"I don't believe we are currently in the golden age of the television or the golden age of the game console or the golden age of the Internet; frankly, five years from now I don't know that you'll be able to tell the difference between those worlds,"

So where's the irony and segregation from the internet? They haven't segregated anyone from the internet without giving a browser, You can still use it.  like I said a pointless comment from you. He also says in the future.
Are we in the future yet? Nope so there's still chance to put a browser in their consoles.
A bit pointless if you ask me as my Wii browser lost my interest very early on and both the wii and PS3 browser are restricted in what codecs you can use, they are slow and cumbersome to use compaired to the PC so until they can match the ease of using the PC i'd rather do without and have services like facebook(eurgh) intergrated into the console itself than use a tacked on browser just there to make their stats look impressive against their rivals.

And finally you don't think MS are allowed to talk about the future of the internet or browsers when their browser is the most used in the world?

@Patapon is something new and different that scary to you?

or is it because sony didn't come up with it the reason you don't like it? oh and it was sony that sacrificed a goat to promote God of War 2. Which proves my point about you only liking it if sony does it.

What haters? I meant what exactly wrong with using a remote control? What is exactly so hard about pushing a button to change channels?

They made an innovation and now are looking for places to use it, instead of considering a problem first and developing the solution later. This approach is behind many failed ideas.

I don't doubt that eventually something will replace the remote control, but I don't think gestures or speech recognition is it... not yet at least.

No one wants their TV suddenly changing channel because you said the "wrong" word in a conversation.

Hmmm, no. Maybe that could be a nice addition for 360 users, but I don't wanna fart and that being recognized by the device as a stop, or fast forward or something.

Not for me.

I prefer remotes.

So, in essence, Microsoft wants me to instead of push a button - Power use 0.005 Watts

a) have a running Xbox360 - Power use 200 Watts

b) have a running Natal peripheral - Power use 50(?) Watts

Sure makes sense to me.....

I see what you mean NJ5 about looking for places to use it and they should be. It never ceases to surprise me when I see someone take something we've had for years and come up with a new use for it.
Looking for new places to use it isn't so bad but I don't think I follow with your problem first solution later comment?
Why shouldn't we look for new ideas instead of looking for new problems? That way of thinking will only hold us back?

What never surprises me is how in every natal thread the amount of people intimidated and scared by something new.
Don't you people ever try new things? Get excited by new ideas? For a gaming forum there are a lot of luddites.

or maybe if it wasn't MS coming up with this you'd be more accepting

Solution first, problem later is the philosophy behind tons of gimmicks. Don't get me wrong, sometimes it works... but most of the times it just generates a wasteful solution to a problem.

Remotes are cheap, easy to use, effective and efficient (just slap on some batteries which last for years). Why do we need something to replace it and why would Natal be it?

Well then NJ5 that is exactly what ms is doing. They've found a potential problem and are coming up with a solution for it.
Did anyone here actually read the article?
he said
"The forthcoming Project Natal motion control technology could replace the television remote control in the future, automatically scheduling content according to the people in a room, according to comments made by Xbox Live general manager Marc Whitten.

Speaking at the Streaming Media West show, as reported by Yahoo! Tech, Whitten described the increasing number of video applications - which includes Netflix in the US and Sky Player in the UK - on the Xbox 360 as the "biggest surprise" of his job.

Whitten also predicted that the increasing range and number of sources for video content required a new, easier to use controller than the traditional remote control - and that Project Natal was well placed to take over this role."

Scheduling content to the people in the room. You walk in and it sees you so sets up your favourites or recorded programmes before you sit down. Without you having to do anything.

Large number of video sources and increasing range requires a new easier to control remote. You can still use an old fashioned remote, i know i would prefer that to watch but there woulod be segments when it's easier to use gesture or point and click with you're finger.
Have natal built into the tv. Natal is not only for the 360, it suits being placed in the tv. Far fectched having it as part of the tv?
Remember most of you "sceptics" weren't so "sceptical" when sony said the cell would be in everything including tvs. You loved the idea of having a so called "supercomputer" in a tv.
Not overkill or and extra useless drain on electricity then.

Too many here for whatever reasons are reading only the headline and then jumping on the hate bandwagon. Think about it for a while. take it with a pinch of salt instead of taking his words as gospel to use them to attack natal, and see how it could be implimented.

But most of you all have made you mind up and it wont work because you can't think of any way to use it. Because you said so.
I'm so glad none of you work in any scientific field. We'd still be running from fire and killing people possesed by the devil for using sorcery like the wheel.
