Forums - Gaming - Is having a good soundtrack as important for a game as it used to be?

A good soundtrack takes a good game and makes it great. Best examples I can think of right now are Persona 3 and 4. Taking by themselves they are wonderful games, but if you add in the phenomenal soundtracks they go over the top.

Think about Chrono Trigger, FF7, FF6 etc, without wonderful soundtracks.

That'd be kinda like having a wife without breasts. She could still do the dishes, perhaps even better without the tata's getting in the way but it just wouldn't be the same.

This is becoming quite rare though, I'm not sure what the composers are doing differently now as opposed to when I grew up or maybe its just me having changed?

Game music is more ambient now and has fewer strong melodies. This might create 'atmosphere' but the tracks aren't catchy enough to remember or inspire emotion. It is also more like pop music because that's what they think we want.

When music was '8-bit', you couldn't do ambience and you had to have a tune in order to stand out.

Not all games rely on that. Petroglyph showed that brilliantly with Universe At War: Earth Assault.

It has strong memorable tunes .. Very powerful music ! :P

Ofcourse it was made by the same who did the original cnc games soundtracks... not to mention Dune 2.

Music is very important. Even if it's just atmospheric.

Agreed.

There are exceptions. Mario Galaxy being the most prominent of recent games I think. It's also possible to do ambience really well: Metroid Prime's Tallon Overworld was exceptionally good.

Music is as key as graphics or anything else for me. In all of my favorite games, the soundtrack is major part of what makes the experience memorable. Not to say that game music is getting better today – in general, just the opposite.

And there our opinions differentiate. :p though I can't comment on metroid prime as I haven't played that.

I do think there have been a lot of games the last few years with soundtracks that stand out much more than galaxy. Again that's just my opinion.

Name some good tracks. I'm always looking for good video game music, especially if it's better than SMG.
