Not all games rely on that. Petroglyph showed that brilliantly with Universe At War: Earth Assault.

It has strong memorable tunes .. Very powerful music ! :P

Ofcourse it was made by the same who did the original cnc games soundtracks... not to mention Dune 2.

There are exceptions. Mario Galaxy being the most prominent of recent games I think. It's also possible to do ambience really well: Metroid Prime's Tallon Overworld was exceptionally good.

And there our opinions differentiate. :p though I can't comment on metroid prime as I haven't played that.

I do think there have been a lot of games the last few years with soundtracks that stand out much more than galaxy. Again that's just my opinion.
