The question is...

WHY do JRPG's need momentum again. What has caused them to LOSE momentum.

Why haven't they been selling as well as previous gens?

NO evolution for most of the part

Declining console sales

JRPG's on handhelds are more powerful than ever

1st point i can agree with.

2nd point is bullcrap. Wii is selling faster than anything ever. PS3 and 360 are gonna end up higher than any 2nd/3rd place consoles.

3rd point. Yup...

1) Thats 1/3 in terms of you being right

2) wrong, console sales in Japan (I was talking bout japan) HAVE declined....handhelds have risen

3) 2/3 correct

I'll add in two more:

4) Xbox 360 -- most JRPG's have been on it (from big brands) & have all under-performed......sorry to be blunt, they have under-performed, especially the sakaguchi one's, TOV & SO4. IU & ES did above expectations

But hey when you combine TOV PS360 sales its one of the best selling Tales games in Japan

5) Final Fantasy 13 -- It isn;t here, it will bring JRPG fans to consoles, it will result in more JRPG's doing well as JRPG fans own PS3's

IU and ES performed above expectations? How so?

Both were huge gigantic flops.

EDIT: Especiaily Eternal Sonata. Did that game even break 300k WW on both platforms combined?

MH is NOT a RPG.....and ROF has taken that role( way better appeal than FF)

ROF might flop even. What makes you so sure the game will break through? The fancy gunplay?

Well some JRPG's even on PS2 failed to break 200K in Japan

ES & IU weren't "high brand" ones, while Last Remnant (from S-E....seen to be a "RPG for the world" was), TOV/SO4 (from established high selling JRPG franchises in Japan) & The sakaguchi ones were of a high brand cus he made them

So I'll give the benefit of doubt to IU & ES

@Pristine

I know ROF could flop, it could be a terrible game too

so far the art style is dull.....all we've seen is gameplay in the tower, I hope we can go outside the tower/city thing

ROf in the end may just be a Valkyria Chronicles type "niche" success.....nowhere near the success xxain is hoping for

Er, after FFX was also when the series started to deviate and experiment? Doesn't that actually go against your claim that JRPG decline is due to stagnation?

I am not really sure what you mean by "experiment." Even FFXIII remains true, for the most part, to older FF games albeit it shamefully copied star wars in many ways but that doesnt really bother me granted I couldnt stomach to finish the game. X and X2 both had settings that were very similar to VII and VIII. IX was a throwback game. So far, nothing new aside from graphics. The stories always play out the same way too. A drama about a bunch of tweeny people that were in the right place at the right time who somehow become stronger than anyone around and fall in a meritless and completely unbelievable romance before saving the world from a weakling boss. The premise is fine for the most part but the writing in most jrpg's is so bad and cheesy that it become unbearable.

and the storyline's in WRPG's are any better???? appart from Bioware products, most WRPG's either have weak stories or none at all(which is why fallout 3 and oblivion are such an abomination). At least JRPG's attempt giving u a good story some are epic some arent but at least i no there trying.

How can you not understand this? FFX used traditional conventions that could be found in a Final Fantasy. Random encounters, Turned based gameplay etc. FFXI was an online MMORPG and FFXII was a MMORPG without the MMO, component. Thats what he means by experimenting and thats why FFXI and FFXII had lower sales than FFX

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

Agreed

Oblivions & Fallout 3's story was such a joke

Bioware on the other hand....PROPS to them for having a gripping story throughout a long game

its so hard to make a GOOD story for a 50 hour game

Its much easier to make a good one for a 10 hour game on the other hand
