I believe it's the number of pre orders at the specific store / retailer.
"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY." --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

For the curious, Famitsu top 5 per console so far...
Wii
PlayStation 3
Xbox 360
...and what the hell, handhelds too...
Nintendo DS
PSP

So, it seems MGS4 is undertracked with HSG overtracked. VGC combines the sales of the cheaper edition re-release whereas Famitsu does not.

Yeah, Famitsu separates later budget releases and rereleases. Otherwise Hot Shots would move to number 2 in the PS3 list and Ace Combat 6 would actually top the 360 list.

actually they have been TERRIBLY off lately
with a few predictions being beaten in 1 week of the games release itself

I think Samurai Warriors 3, Tales of Graces, and FFXIII each have a shot at getting close to the high end of Famitsu's lifetime predictions. It would be great if at least one of these games can outdo their max lifetime estimate.
I don't know much about SW3, but if their FFXIII and Tales predictions somehow turn out right... consoles are not looking good in Japan. JRPG's in particular.
Going by Famitsu's predictions, ToG is pretty much a flop.
I mean a main title (and by no other then Team Destiny, their games tend to sell the most in Japan) selling the same as low-budget spin-off like ToS:DotNW sounds pretty bad.
If anyone has them, what are the latest famitsu predictions and also predictions for recent games?

[WII] Tales of Graces (Bandai Namco Games) FS 120K-170K / TF 180K-230K
ToS:DotNW did 156k first week and crawled to ~220k.
