The only case in which it is unacceptable is one in which there was an expectation that there would be or that there should be online multiplayer. We knew from the beginning that there was not going to be, and I have yet to hear a decent argument that there should be. By syaing that it is worse for having local-only MP, you are rating the game according to what it should be, not according to what it is. Do you see the problem? Nintendo obviously is focusing their efforts somewhere else, its certainly not New Super Mario Bros. Wii. This is a ridiculous thing to sya. It's been acknowledged as being excellent to play alone, excellent to play with friends, featuring enough content and powers and fun levels to qualify as the best 2-D Mario based on its merits. That speaks not only of effort but of artistry, the kind that really defines a game as an example of quality. You are latching onto a single facet of what this game is not and allowing that to affect the way you view the entire rest of the game, which is fallacious to the point of absurdity. That being said, I preordered and paid in full today and I cannot wait, don't take it the wrong way. The DS has online multiplayer when it's appropriate and when the system can handle it. In this cas and given the focus of this game, online multiplayer is neither necessary nor appropriate, and its exclusion is not detrimental to the experience of the game itself.To sum it up: Game is multiplayer focused System has online capabilities Any sane person adds those 2 together to add online features. This is not a nintendo 64. This is a current generation console and we are all about online gaming. Look at Mario Kart Wii. EVEN THE DS HAS ONLINE MULTIPLAYER. |
Okay, I'll make a game, tell you I omit something, but even though it is a massive disapointment, please don't judge me on that! All nintendo games are perfect!

Split screen is not inferior - in fact it is vastly superior if you live with someone who you enjoy playing co-op with, which I do.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 also has 2 player split screen Spec ops and 4 player split screen multiplayer, so I suppose you should play the game before you judge.

sure is superior wasting my HD screen with non HD video.
Split screen is also incredibly taxing on the processor, which online is not.
I'm not judging a game! I am just saying that split-screen is just as important - possibly moreso - as compared to online co-op.

Except its totally not. We live in a connected world. Online Multiplayer would make the game a 92-95, its simply a sub 90 without it. It is totally reasonable to critquie it as it is a massive shortcoming to the game.
It doesn't RUIN the game, the game is awesome, It's just lazy.

I would take splitscreen over online any time.

I don't give two shits about what is or isn't taxing or what is or isn't HD - I want to be able to play co-op with my wife or my brother when we're in the same building. This is something I used to be able ot do, it's something Halo lets me do, and it's something I would rather not be left out. I see it as more grievous an ommission than anything in NSMBW.
it is not lazy, it's a result of a different focus in terms of multiplayer.
Dang I was 0.1 point on my prediction. Also to everyone who thinks online is a issue. Be quiet and just pretend muiltplayer is not there and play it for the single player experiance
