they don't communicate that it's all new content, people still think it's a port with added multiplayer/powerups.

commercial reeks of Cammie Dunaway scent.

Only stupid fanboys think it's a port.

Nintendo fans and....everyone else, see this as an awesome, brand new 2D Mario game with 4 players.

The game is an epic win, and the casual audience will see it as so. I love Nintendo more than anything, but it's also great to see this back again. We can release more Wii-series titles later.

Not true, most people are looking at it as a port of NSMBDS. The commercial isn't good enough, they're gonna have to air it a lot. Plus they will probably gonna have to do some serious viral marketing like they did for the Wii's launch. There is no way this game will do what it has to, a lot is banking on it and I just don't see it. The commercial was supposed to be incredible, this just looks like some ordinary basic communicating.

The Wii Fit Plus commercial is much more interesting than that.

Dude, most people outside of the hardcore who are going to be picking this game up don't even know what the term "port" means. There are going to be a TON of 20-somethings who didn't make the leap to 3D gaming, see this commercial, and are going to immediatley buy. And I'm not sure what you mean by "incredible"? The commerical had awesome gameplay footage, great shots of the various people playing (like the 20-somethings I just mentioned), and awesome remixed old-school Mario music.

This is actually one of the best commercials Nintendo has put out in a very long time. Consumer marketing nailed it this time.

I think that some people in the industry over-estimate the value most gamers put on online multiplayer while under-estimating the value most gamers put on local multiplayer ...

Games like Wii Sports, Lego Starwars, Mario Kart, Rockband, Super Smas Bros. Brawl, and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games have done so well (in a large part) because of local multiplayer; and I suspect that local co-operative and competitive multiplayer will only boost interest in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which would already be a massive hit if it was single player only.

I do believe azelover has a point. He asks the question: Do this commercial communicate well enough that this is a brand new classic mario sidescroller?

I think this could be the result of someone watching the commercial:

*Sitting at home watching TV*

-average joe: wow, wtf? A new mario game? looks damned fun - I havent been gaming in a while, but damned! I need to look into this

*Goes online on the family PC and google mario bros wii*

-average joe: hmm, ok, so this really is a brand new mariogame, wow, wtf! ive been waiting like..15 years for this! HONEEEY!! IM GOING TO THE STORE TO GET A WII FOR THE KIDS!

*Runs to store and pick up wii plus nsmb.wii*

Ok, maybe that was'nt very realistic, but what do I know?

Agreed.

Hell, I'd throw in Halo and Gears Of War into that mix.

As for the commercial, I'm not quite sure what people are asking for. It's a new 2D Mario game, that's the message. What else must people know? Word of mouth can do the rest.

This is going to sell like crack

mM

Yeah, the commerical doesn't tell much, but it gets the point across well enough.

This game is all about local multiplayer.

"We'll toss the dice however they fall,
And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

Check out MyAnimeList and my Game Collection. Owner of the 5 millionth post.

It would be so much cooler if Mario was a creepy-ass looking baby.

There's only one thing this commercial needs to do, show the game as fun for everyone, this commercial does that, it reeks of fun and social gaming, which is what Wii owners want

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

I heard that song last year in the Wii Music commercial.

The ad is OK for a regular ad, this was supposed to be genius. I hope their marketing plans don't just include airing these two commercials, in fact I hope most of their marketing by far will be something else. Insane quality viral marketing for starters, and not the crap mall tour they did for Wii Music.
