Forums - Gaming - Simple, fun gameplay and stylish visuals = kids game

So Shaun White Snowboarding is coming exclusively to the Wii this year and I wandered over to IGN (who really knows why, as they seem to publish rubbish recently) and read their review. It got a 7.6, which is respectable (higher than PS360, lower than last year Wii), but this is what really stood out.

The simple, fun gameplay and stylish visuals ensure this is still one of the better kids' games on Wii, but if you already took the Road Trip you may be disappointed that Shaun White doesn't have a lot of new tricks up his sleeve.

The first thing you should note is that this game is aimed squarely at kids. Everything from the simple arcade gameplay to the exaggerated graphics to the Saturday Morning cartoon humor is very kid friendly. That's not a bad thing -- it works well as a kids' game. Just know that this isn't the realistic snowboard sim that a seasoned gamer might want.

So, do you agree with IGN's latest statement that seasoned gamers wasn't extream realism and no longer enjoy arcade style games? I don't really need to post my thoughts, as a seasoned gamer I like pretty much all styles of play and actually prefer arcade games myself.

Oh, and I'll throw in that this is one of the worst reviews I've read at IGN, because they gave so few details (7 total paragraphs, each maybe 3 sentances long) and spent more time mocking it than anything. Considering I loved the last one it would have been nice to actually read a review on it.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Well, Wii owners do believe that if a game has colors and isn't focused on the most detailed facial graphics.....then it's a kid's game and therefore should be on the Wii. LBP for example

It's been that way for a while now with this "core" nonsense. It's BS but it still exists.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

Simple and kids do go well together, and unless there is another layer below that simplicity, than it can be labelled as a kids game. Shallowness should be associated with kids, and casual gaming too

New Super Mario Bros (and Wii) is simple fun with stylized graphics, I press A to jump, and B to run, but I wouldn't consider it a kids game.

Honestly, I'm more frustrated that no one is giving it a meaningful review. I just read Eurogamers review and they spent the entire first page trashing the game along with the last game, while mostly just complaining that it isn't a sim.

After watching that video review, this game strikes me as a crappy/watery/easy version of the SSX games from last generation. Arcadey is great, the original ssx games were very aracdey. The thing is, they weren't insanely easy or blatantly aimed at kids (exaggerated artstyle, ingame adverts, simplistic gameplay) and required some skill to place first in later races and trick competitions. If the reviewer managed to beat this in a day, something tells me the "for kids" label, though overused, is probably suitable to this game. Of course none of those factors necessarily make it a kids game, but the way they come together here are pretty obvious. As others have said, being a game aimed at kids doesn't mean others are precluded from enjoying it.

I read his characterization of the game as: This game is worse than SSX, SSX: Tricky, and SSX 3 in almost every way, only buy this if you want something easy or for your kids. "Seasoned gamers" probably want something that provides enough challenge/depth to take them more than a couple days to complete.

The only people who think that arcade-style gameplay and stylized graphics make a game "for kids" are kids themselves, either age-wise or mentally.

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."

I agree that 'seasoned gamers' may want a more deep snowboarding game, but I think anyone can still enjoy a arcade styled game. If it's fun, people will enjoy it.

Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,

Mario Galaxy is a game for kids. Not just for kids but for kids too. So its a kids game the target market aimes on kids (and a lot games are aiming for adults and kids). But I never understood why kids-game is almost a curse word for videogames.

Thats nothing bad. I think that kids can have a good taste when it comes to games.

If its not brown and doesnt have guns its a kids game.

not what i think but the general perception.
